King-size Stupid

From The Wonk Room at THINK PROGRESS:

Following the devastating earthquake in Haiti this week, many activists and politicians have heightened the cry for granting undocumented Haitians in the U.S. Temporary Protected Status (TPS). TPS is a longstanding cornerstone of U.S. immigration policy that is afforded to undocumented immigrants from a small number of federally-designated countries suffering armed conflicts, natural disasters, or other extraordinary circumstances until conditions improve. Many claim Haitians should’ve received TPS after four consecutive tropical cyclones in 2008 left 800 people dead, hundreds missing, and made the Haitian city of Gonaives “uninhabitable.” However, Rep. Steve King (R-IA) seems to think that not only were undocumented Haitians undeserving of TPS status then, undocumented Haitians living in the U.S. should now be deported back to their country to specifically serve as much-needed relief workers.

ABCNews reports:

“This sounds to me like open borders advocates exercising the Rahm Emanuel axiom: ‘Never let a crisis go to waste,’” Rep. Steve King, R-Iowa, said in an e-mail message to ABCNews. “Illegal immigrants from Haiti have no reason to fear deportation but if they are deported, Haiti is in great need of relief workers and many of them could be a big help to their fellow Haitians.”

Members of King’s own party disagree. Though none of three GOP lawmakers is a co-sponsor of Rep. Luis Gutierrez’s (D-IL) comprehensive immigration reform bill, Lincoln Diaz-Balart (R-FL), Mario Diaz-Balart (R-FL) and Ileana Ros-Lehtinen (R-FL) have called on President Obama to grant TPS to undocumented Haitian immigrants, “a virtual lifeline for such an impoverished country.”

…snip…

King blatantly ignores the fact that Haitian immigrants could probably do a lot more to rebuild Haiti by staying in the U.S. than by returning to the little that’s left of their decimated country. Allowing undocumented Haitians who are already living in the U.S. to legally work would help them earn the honest wages they need to send back money to their families and get their country back on its feet.  [...]  If deported, they are essentially forced into a situation in which they’d become victims who need more relief.

The Obama administration has agreed to halt the deportation of undocumented Haitians, though those currently held in detention centers will remain jailed unless TPS is granted. Sen. Bill Nelson (D-FL) points out, that “it makes no sense to tell Haitians already here that they can stay in the U.S. in the wake of the earthquake, but cannot legally support themselves.”

UPDATE Sen. Richard Lugar (R-IA) has issued a press release calling on the Secretary of the Department of Homeland Security to grant TPS for 18 months to Haitian immigrants. Lugar states, “It is in the foreign policy interest of the United States and a humanitarian imperative of the highest order to have all people of Haitian descent in a position to contribute towards the recovery of this island nation.”

From POLITICALLY SPEAKING:

King doesn’t quite get Emanuel’s quote from 2008 right — it is, “Never let a serious crisis go to waste. What I mean by that is it’s an opportunity to do things you couldn’t do before.”

It’s been all Haiti all day for me. It’s a marvel how the response seems about 10 gazillion times better than Katrina. Had to get that off my chest.

Ever notice how Republicans do something really evil (think Shock Doctrine) then fucking accuse democrats of doing it? Makes me want to punch something. It’s King’s own goddamn bright recollection of guilt that makes him talk that way. Fucker.

    • he and other asswipe rethugs hear what others are saying through their own prism (i don’t know how you hear through a prism, but go with me on this). king interpreted rahm’s statement as something negative–take advantage of everything for your own benefit–instead of as something positive–when something is broken, use the opportunity to make it better when you fix it–because king is a selfish opportunistic asswipe, and he can’t fathom doing anything good for anyone unless it benefits him.

It’s called projection. They (the rethugs) are always good at projecting onto others what they themselves are thinking, doing and are guilty of.
The rethugs need to wake up and realize that we, as humans, all have our own thoughts and deeds. But they are so self-centered, they think that everyone thinks like they do. That’s why most of the time they make absolutely no sense to us.
They make me sick. They are so pathetic.

        • i think a lot of them don’t have any real beliefs. they just say whatever it is that they think will get them elected or benefit themselves in some way. they’re totally self-centered and selfish and, yes, pathetic.

  2. I don’t recognize this guy; all assholes look alike to me. But I’ll put him on the list of elected garbage that needs to be shit-canned at the earliest opportunity.

  3. I’m glad Richard Lugar chimed in with something reasonable and compassionate. I’m glad there are still sane Republicans. I’m sad that there are so few of them.

    • lugar has been known to be reasonable at times. this should be a no-brainer, even for rethugs. speaking against the haitian people now is stupid politics, not to mention heartless and disgusting.

  4. Rush has no concept of sowing and reaping. You might think he could put a sock in in, but no. Not satisfied with his prominence in media, his gold, even his narcotics, he sows desention on the decaying bodies of poor black people. Might want to research notable historic figures from Samaria.
