Conservative members of Congress have been feeling the heat all over the country, as a Main Street Movement of everyday Americans have been protesting their efforts to cut crucial services and public investment, including their vote to effectively end Medicare. Last week, during a town hall in Schaumburg, Illinois, [Joe] Walsh came face to face with this public anger. A video of the town hall posted on YouTube shows that a constituent asked why we aren’t reforming the laws that give tax dollars to oil companies that are making huge profits. Walsh replied by saying that he “absolutely” wants to get rid of subsidies for oil companies […]
Unfortunately, the House Republican caucus voted unanimously last month to protect these very subsidies. Joining Walsh in now condemning the subsidies is Rep. Tom McClintock (R-CA), who now says we should end them. The question is whether these members of Congress are really serious about ending these giveaways to the oil industry and would change their positions if they once again came up for a vote.

Cool! Schaumburg was less than 10 miles from where I used to live – I drove past Woodfield Mall on my daily commute to work! Local folk make good. Then again, Schaumburg is one of the richest of the western suburbs of Chicago, so they’re not quite “average” folk, but hey – hometown is hometown!
Jon Stewart had an interesting guest today, I forget the gent’s name, but he pointed out that it is much more difficult to overturn entitlement programs than to enact them. His example was for cotton farmers, with an annual subsidy that was enacted during the Depression when they were individuals starving to death, but now are giant corporate farms earning obscene profits. From his discussion, as well as examples like this one here, it sounds like we need fewer new spending bills, and need to review and massively trim existing programs that no longer make sense. The savings could ease tax increases for years to come!
the guest on TDS was Philip K. Howard. that was an interesting interview. it made me think that certain laws ought to have expiration dates. if they’re still necessary, congress can vote on renewing them.

I spent the first half of my youth in Niles. Not too far from Golf Road and Washington Street (by Golf-Mil shopping Center). If I remember right, there was a great model railroad store in Park Ridge. Then again, that was almost 40 years ago! (Yes, I’m an old fart! 😀 )
I don’t know if you guys are gonna be ever able to lower the ceiling of political contributions… Your system is rotten… 😦

where do they find so many people without even a trace of conscience? when is enough money enough? that’s what i don’t get.
Seems the mood may be favoring the cut … then again, the oil industry is very effective at lobbying. Odds seem to be favoring a cut rather than an elimination (sad to say).
whose mood? it doesn’t seem to matter to anyone in d.c. what the mood of the people who employ them is. what a pity that middle class and poor people don’t have lobbyists.
True .. the will of the people of one thing, Washington’s interpretation of that will is another matter, let alone Washington’s will.
