So Who Protects America from Chimpy?

Good morning. At this moment, somewhere in the world, terrorists are planning new attacks on our country. Their goal is to bring destruction to our shores that will make September the 11th pale by comparison.–George W. Bush, February 13, 2008

From the Christian Science Monitor:

Washington – The White House and Democrats on Capitol Hill each had a hand in letting a temporary wiretapping law expire this weekend, but most of the political fallout is landing on Congress.

President Bush had pledged to veto any bill that merely extended the temporary law without resolving the matter of immunity for telecommunications firms that helped the government with its secret eavesdropping program after 9/11. A “patchwork extension” wouldn’t give the security needed to protect the nation, Mr. Bush said, and he urged Republican lawmakers to vote against it.

The Huffiness Post

From The New York Times:

[John McCain] is in the midst of an at-times awkward transition — from being one of the most disruptive figures in his party to someone playing it safer, not to mention trying to make nice with Republicans he clearly despises and who feel similarly about him.

…snip…

One of the trademarks of Mr. McCain’s rebel image has been his inability to cloak his emotions, especially anger. He has been prone to volcanic blowups over the years.

The Year of the Raisin

Forgive me for feeling a bit nostaglic, but it’s our anniversary! Hysterical Raisins started with Chimpy in Charge a year ago today. Well, it actually started with another name (don’t ask me, I forgot what it was), but it was changed to Hysterical Raisins shortly thereafter. Mikk0 and I collaborated on a spoof of an IMDb page, and we somehow wound up with a blog!
I thought I would look through the past 343 posts and pick out some of the posters that had special meaning to me, that didn’t get a lot of attention, or that represented important or just plain ridiculous events over the past year. I was going to try to fit them into one image, but I wound up with two. I hope you will forgive me.

Well, he did take up space in college!

From The New York Times:

The order by President Bush for the Navy to launch an antimissile interceptor to destroy a disabled satellite before it falls from orbit carries opportunity, but also potential embarrassment, for the administration and advocates of its missile defense program.

Oh boy!! The Commanderer told the Navy to shoot down the evil space thing! This is gonna be so cool!!

Capitol Chill

From the Tri-City Herald:

WASHINGTON The House voted Thursday to hold two of President Bush’s confidants in contempt for failing to cooperate with an inquiry into whether a purge of federal prosecutors was politically motivated.

Angry Republicans boycotted the vote and staged a walkout.

(Oh, how I wished the steps of the Capitol had been really, really icy!)

Guess who has a heart on for Valentine’s Day!

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Senate Ethics Committee said Wednesday that Idaho Sen. Larry Craig acted improperly in connection with a men’s room sex sting last year and had brought discredit on the Senate.

Gee, all that excitement going on, and Larry still found the time to send us a Valentine’s Day card! What a guy!!

Nice to see you still have that wide stance! Interesting topiary, Larry! Make sure to tip your gardener well! 😉

If torture doesn’t stink, why does Mike McConnell have to hold his nose?

LONDON (AP) — One of the United States’ top judges said in an interview broadcast in Britain on Tuesday that interrogators can inflict pain to obtain critical information about an imminent terrorist threat.

Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia said that aggressive interrogation could be appropriate to learn where a bomb was hidden shortly before it was set to explode or to discover the plans or whereabouts of a terrorist group.

“It seems to me you have to say, as unlikely as that is, it would be absurd to say you couldn’t, I don’t know, stick something under the fingernail, smack him in the face. It would be absurd to say you couldn’t do that,” Scalia told British Broadcasting Radio Corp.
