And Bias For All

From The Boston Globe:

LAST YEAR, Attorney General Alberto Gonzales had to resign after he could not explain why the Justice Department had fired nine US attorneys, all Bush appointees, who had prosecuted Republican officials or declined to pursue flimsy cases against Democrats. Now it turns out that the politicization of the Justice Department under President Bush went even deeper. A report by the department’s inspector general and its Office of Professional Responsibility finds that officials used political litmus tests in the hiring of staff lawyers and even interns.

According to the report, applicants for the department’s entry-level honors program — which attracts highly qualified lawyers from top schools — would get tossed in the reject pile if they had links to organizations like The Nature Conservancy or the Battered Immigrant Women Project. One rejected applicant was a high-ranking law graduate who had written a paper on the detention of people under the USA Patriot Act. By the same token, department officials went out of their way to hire members of the conservative Federalist Society. Investigators found e-mails from officials clearly indicating political bias in hiring.

Under civil service law and Justice Department guidelines, it is illegal to let political ideology or affiliation affect hiring decisions. A president and attorney general can fill top positions with political appointees, but the career civil service lawyers who do much of the work in the department’s divisions, from civil rights to antitrust, are supposed to be chosen strictly on their merits.

…snip…

Congress is still trying to find out if orders for the US attorney firings came from then-White House aides Karl Rove and Harriet Miers. The new report shows that making the Justice Department a wing of the Republican Party had become routine under Gonzales and his predecessor, John Ashcroft.

  1. you have to see the right wing douches like Scarborough poo=poo this as just “well all presidents do this”

this administration has thoroughly ruined this country — for good i am afraid.

  2. dcAp,
i accidentally saw a bit of morning schmo yesterday, and it was the constant sarcastic what a big shock that is by squinty eyes and his female moronic sidekick whenever the fact that chimpy & co. illegally used politics in their hiring and firing practices. of course, squinty eyes didn’t have a guest on (like his fellow msnbc cohort, dan abrams) who might have pointed out that it is or, at least, should be a shock.

Bias? In the Bush Administration? No!

dcap. I fear you are right about the country being ruined. After all, sh*t flows downhill…

nonnie, Gonzo looks so… so judicial in the poster when really he was so… so political. I love the line “the criteria corruption.”

why didn’t anybody figure this out when monica goodling babe testified? and that other sarah chick person?

    regents? pensacola? blech and barf!

  5. nightowl,
of course, bias! it stands for bush is a $hithead. gonzo couldn’t look judicial if he dressed up in judge judy’s robe and frilly blouse. i do like that pic of ashcroft, though. he looks so….so….constipated!
thank you for noticing criteria corruption. i can always count on you to find the little things. 😀

  6. jenn,
sara taylor. i had to go look for her name. there have been so many who testified about gonzogate. i have no idea why anyone might characterize this as the straw that broke the camel’s back. all we hear is how close to the end of the chimpy maladministration we are, so we needn’t bother about standing up for the constitution, separation of powers, privacy, or other silly things.

nonnie, what a funny (or not so funny) acronym! And, your description of Ashcroft is so… so hysterical.

  8. nightowl,
what’s funnier is that, in the original pic that i used of ashcrack, i think he was praying!

  9. nightowl724

    Get out of town!

  10. You shoulda told me you let me know you wanted some thing on this subject.

  11. hi james pence,
    welcome to the raisin! 😀
i was confused by your comment until i clicked on your name. turnabout is fair play! 😉
by the way, if you ever want to use that movie poster of nasty old mitch, feel free!

I saw that same comment on Gagging Joe yesterday. Like everything that comes out about Bu$hco, my first question was “This is news?” I too remember all of this being brought up when Monica Goodling testified. It all leaves me with only one question Nonnie. One existential, burning and haunting inquiry?

Why did you airbrush out the trail of slime that follows Abu G for the poster?

  13. jeb,
i didn’t airbrush it. you just can’t see it because of the shadows.
i wonder when abu’s unemployment checks stop. i haven’t heard that he has found a job yet, have you?

  14. jeb

Again Senator I don’t have the answer to that question.

  15. that must be the problem! on the job applications, he fills in each blank with i don’t remember. i bet the letter of recommendation from chimpy doesn’t help either:

fredo wurked fer me, and he did a verry good job. i wuld tell yew what he did, butt i have eckzecutive privleje, so we do’nt have to tell ennyone.
