Puck You!

From the New York Daily News:

PHILADELPHIA – She may be the most famous “hockey mom” in the country, but that did not buy Republican vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin much love last night in the City of Brotherly Love.

Philadelphia sports fans, who once booed Santa Claus at an Eagles football halftime show, greeted Palin in similar fashion when she dropped the ceremonial first puck at center ice prior to the Flyers’ season opener against the Rangers at the Wachovia Center. Loud boos rained down when she walked out on the ice just after 7 p.m. with her daughters Willow and Piper.

Original DVD cover.

The news that Palin would appear at the game had caused a stir in Philadelphia all week – Flyers’ owner Ed Snider is a GOP backer and heavy contributor to John McCain’s presidential campaign, raising questions about the propriety of her appearance. Before last night’s game, hundreds of protestors lined S. Broad Street outside the Park Hyatt at Bellevue Hotel, while Palin attended a fund-raiser inside the hotel.

“I have two daughters who are Ivy-League educated. When we’re given an opportunity to have a woman run for vice president of the United States, the woman we get is Sarah Palin,” fumed Anne Bennis-Hartman, 53, of South Jersey. “I came to protest because of my own sense of outrage. This is such a shame for other smart women who aspire to have political careers.”

From Newsday:

Sarah Palin did not prove to be much of a good-luck charm for the Flyers. No sooner had she dropped the ceremonial first puck, given constituent Scott Gomez a kiss on the cheek and left the Wachovia Center ice on opening night than the home side trailed the Rangers 4-0.

Politics do not mix well with hockey, or hockey columns. It’s red lines and blue lines here, not red state/blue state sophistry. Just a word of caution to anyone who wants to inject a bitter national election into a regular-season game: “Don’t.”

From the Los Angeles Times:

The world’s most famous “hockey mom” can now join the ever-growing list of icons booed by Philly fans. Move over, Santa Claus and Mike Schmidt, Sarah Palin was booed tonight in front of Willow and Piper as she was introduced to drop the first puck at the Flyers’ home opener against the New York Rangers.

Despite pleas from the scoreboard at the Wachovia Center, which read “Flyers fans, show Philadelphia’s class and welcome America’s No. 1 hockey mom, Sarah Palin,” ABC News’ Jake Tapper reports that the booing was so prevalent that the music had to be cranked up to “deafening” levels in order to compete with the fans from the city of Brotherly Love.

Although Pennsylvania is often considered a swing state, the jeering is easily heard in the video above [at the link], and one can clearly see a few Obama/Biden signs in the stands.

From Fox News:

The GOP Vice-Presidential nominee said at an earlier fundraiser that she would stop some of the booing from the rowdy Philadelphia fans by putting her seven year old daughter, Piper in a Flyers jersey. She said, “How dare they boo Piper!”

Move over, Britney Spears! I think we have a new contender for Mother of the Year!

I feel sorry for her daughter. That’s something no child should have to experience.

And as for the “Mother-of-the-Year.” She put her in a Flyers jersey to keep them from booing her? What kind of moron, what kind of a$$hole would do that to their kid? Boy that tells me even a lot more about her lack of integrity than I ever wanted to know.

  2. she drags her daughter as a screen

what a piece of crap Sarah is…….. i can only imagine how those kids are gonna turn out

meanwhile as loud as the boos were — they couldnt be loud enough

  3. jeb and dcAp,
i have said before that i never see her radiating any true emotion or warmth toward her kids. everything seems well-rehearsed and superficial, even in the candid shots. i think she still has the beauty contestant mentality, where you say and act the way you think you should for the judges. the only thing important to her is winning. she doesn’t give a flying $hit about how her kids would feel. i honestly think she is a narcissist. nothing matters to her except her.

  4. Friend of the court

She keeps bringing the baby out, too. That little boy has no idea about what is going on and it is nothing but exploitation. They need to go home.

  5. I think she’s a narcissist as well. Should I post the criteria for narcissism from the DSM-IV?

  6. yes, please, neon vincent! 😀

  7. fotc!!
    where ya been?
i think they need to go home, and then someone needs to call child protective services. i get the feeling that the kids are usually dropped off at grandma and grandpa’s house and left there until there is a need for a photo op.

  8. I thought she said her kids were off limits. I guess when she needs them to serve as human Kevlar, it’s okay then.
I think she’s a total narcissist as well.
She and Bush are strikingly similar, eh?

  9. karen,
the kids are nothing but props. it’s very sad. i wonder if they will grow up as narcissists like their parents.

  10. Nah, they’ll grow up as alkies, drug and/or sex addicts.
The two oldest ones are already turning out that way.

  11. ironically, they have health insurance that probably covers mental health support, but their parents are so out of touch with the kids, they will probably never get to see a mental health professional who can save them before they are lost forever.
