From the New York Daily News:
PHILADELPHIA – She may be the most famous “hockey mom” in the country, but that did not buy Republican vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin much love last night in the City of Brotherly Love.
Philadelphia sports fans, who once booed Santa Claus at an Eagles football halftime show, greeted Palin in similar fashion when she dropped the ceremonial first puck at center ice prior to the Flyers’ season opener against the Rangers at the Wachovia Center. Loud boos rained down when she walked out on the ice just after 7 p.m. with her daughters Willow and Piper.
The news that Palin would appear at the game had caused a stir in Philadelphia all week – Flyers’ owner Ed Snider is a GOP backer and heavy contributor to John McCain’s presidential campaign, raising questions about the propriety of her appearance. Before last night’s game, hundreds of protestors lined S. Broad Street outside the Park Hyatt at Bellevue Hotel, while Palin attended a fund-raiser inside the hotel.
“I have two daughters who are Ivy-League educated. When we’re given an opportunity to have a woman run for vice president of the United States, the woman we get is Sarah Palin,” fumed Anne Bennis-Hartman, 53, of South Jersey. “I came to protest because of my own sense of outrage. This is such a shame for other smart women who aspire to have political careers.”
Sarah Palin did not prove to be much of a good-luck charm for the Flyers. No sooner had she dropped the ceremonial first puck, given constituent Scott Gomez a kiss on the cheek and left the Wachovia Center ice on opening night than the home side trailed the Rangers 4-0.
Politics do not mix well with hockey, or hockey columns. It’s red lines and blue lines here, not red state/blue state sophistry. Just a word of caution to anyone who wants to inject a bitter national election into a regular-season game: “Don’t.”
From the Los Angeles Times:
The world’s most famous “hockey mom” can now join the ever-growing list of icons booed by Philly fans. Move over, Santa Claus and Mike Schmidt, Sarah Palin was booed tonight in front of Willow and Piper as she was introduced to drop the first puck at the Flyers’ home opener against the New York Rangers.
Despite pleas from the scoreboard at the Wachovia Center, which read “Flyers fans, show Philadelphia’s class and welcome America’s No. 1 hockey mom, Sarah Palin,” ABC News’ Jake Tapper reports that the booing was so prevalent that the music had to be cranked up to “deafening” levels in order to compete with the fans from the city of Brotherly Love.
Although Pennsylvania is often considered a swing state, the jeering is easily heard in the video above [at the link], and one can clearly see a few Obama/Biden signs in the stands.
From Fox News:
The GOP Vice-Presidential nominee said at an earlier fundraiser that she would stop some of the booing from the rowdy Philadelphia fans by putting her seven year old daughter, Piper in a Flyers jersey. She said, “How dare they boo Piper!”
Move over, Britney Spears! I think we have a new contender for Mother of the Year!
