From The New York Times:
WASHINGTON — When the top federal prosecutor in New Jersey needed to find an outside lawyer to monitor a large corporation willing to settle criminal charges out of court last fall, he turned to former Attorney General John Ashcroft, his onetime boss. With no public notice and no bidding, the company awarded Mr. Ashcroft an 18-month contract worth $28 million to $52 million.

Chris Matthews in his own words
and up his own ass (via Media Matters):
“I think a lot of people pick a president they figure would sort of like them if they knew them. And if you are overweight or have a problem with your diet — and I certainly did for years — you may figure Hillary doesn’t like people like me. She’s looking down on me. What do you think? Howie, she’s looking down on me, that woman. She thinks she’s better than me.”
No, Tweety, people don’t dislike you because of your fat ass. They dislike you because of your fat mouth.

Hillary Clinton’s New Hampshire primary victory over Barack Obama seemed to stun no one more than reporters and pundits who covered it, raising questions about an overreliance on polls in setting a campaign narrative.
Obama’s victory — and a big one at that — was such a presumption that there was a CNN discussion before the polls closed about how much a relatively narrow win would hurt him.
Instead, Clinton led from the time first results came in until the end. She had 39 percent of the vote to Obama’s 36 percent.
“Over the last 20 years overall the media has fallen into poll myopia,” said David Bohrman, executive producer of CNN’s political coverage. “Sometimes we as a profession lose track of, no matter what the polls say a month ahead or a year ahead, the American citizen has to go out and actually vote. I like that part of the process.”

(CNN) — Sen. John McCain’s victory in New Hampshire’s Republican primary Tuesday came with the help of critics of a war he supports and independents who gave him the edge eight years ago, exit polls found.
The result highlights a remarkable rebound for McCain, whose campaign was largely left for dead over the summer.

From Mother Jones:
The United States military could stay in Iraq for “maybe a hundred years” and that “would be fine with me,” John McCain told two hundred or so people at a town hall meeting in Derry, New Hampshire, on Thursday evening.

MANCHESTER, N.H. (AP) — Mitt Romney and John McCain sparred Sunday over their tax and spending records and who was a better agent for change, in the second Republican debate of the final weekend before the New Hampshire primary.
McCain had the support of 34 percent of likely voters, up from 27 percent in mid-December. Romney was at 30 percent, down from 34 percent, and former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee — the Iowa caucus winner — was third at 13 percent. Former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani had 8 percent, while former Tennessee Sen. Fred Thompson was in the low single digits.
