Back to the Future!

McCainworld, 2013:

After efforts to pressure the Government in Sudan over Darfur failed again in the U.N. Security Council, the United States, acting in concert with a newly formed League of Democracies, applied stiff diplomatic and economic pressure that caused the government of Sudan to agree to a multinational peacekeeping force, with NATO countries providing logistical and air support, to stop the genocide that had made a mockery of the world’s repeated declaration that we would “never again” tolerant such inhumanity. Encouraged by the success, the League is now occupied with using the economic power and prestige of its member states to end other gross abuses of human rights such as the despicable crime of human trafficking.–John McCain, May 15, 2008

JackAssets

WASHINGTON (Reuters) – As the U.S. economy slowed in 2007, President George W. Bush and Vice President Dick Cheney saw their assets stay stable, according to financial disclosure reports released by the White House on Thursday.

The reports showed little change for Bush and Cheney even as a collapse in the housing market caused a credit crunch and led the Federal Reserve to rapidly cut interest rates.

Par For the Course

From Dan Froomkin at the Washington Post:

The nation is in despair over the war in Iraq and the toll it is taking on our troops and their families. But President Bush shows no outward sign of inner pain.

He is chipper in his public pronouncements. His weekly bike rides and daily workouts have put a perpetual spring in his step. He’s always ready with a wisecrack. He just hosted his daughter’s wedding at his multi-million dollar estate in Texas. He takes more vacations than any president in history. He has made clear that he doesn’t lie awake at nights.

And yet now it turns out that Bush has indeed made a personal sacrifice on account of the war. According to the president yesterday, his decision to stop playing golf five years ago wasn’t just an exercise in image control or a function of his bum knee — it was an act of solidarity with the families of the dead and wounded.

Party Animals

From The Hill:

The Republican Party is making a concerted effort to get real after Tuesday’s crushing special-election loss in Mississippi, but the challenge will be agreeing on how to move forward with a new agenda.

The GOP is in a state of upheaval after Democrat Travis Childers’s stunning 54-46 runoff win over Republican Greg Davis in a very conservative district, and it immediately stopped trying to mask that fact after Tuesday’s result was clear.

But despite the stiff dose of reality — and House GOP Leader John Boehner’s (Ohio) Tuesday suggestion that sizable changes could be on the way at the National Republican Congressional Committee (NRCC) — little changed immediately Wednesday as Republicans moved past what they hope will be their last competitive special election before November.

…snip…

[NRCC Chairman Tom Cole (Okla.)] said the GOP’s recent special-election problems have more to do with a deficiency in the party’s message and a loss of confidence in its ability to deliver.

Ummmm, I think that people got the party’s message loud and clear from these guys….

Family Values

From the Washington Post:

Lucky for Rep. Vito Fossella (R-N.Y.), he has New York nightclub impresario John Englebert on his side.

…snip…

In a press release titled “Viva Vito!” — actually, it had eight exclamation points after Viva Vito — and written in perfect Staten Island lexicon, Englebert said: “Bill Clinton and Governor Patterson [SIC] are perfect examples of how ones [SIC] governmental duties should not be judged by there [SIC] personal mistakes.” He called Vito a “great congressman and driving force” and said “tons of Staten Islanders feel the same way.”

The Strife of the Party

WASHINGTON (AFP) — While John McCain is practically assured the Republican presidential nomination, many party members are having a hard time accepting him — and showing it with symbolic votes against him in primary contests.

The Republican nomination battle has been all but decided for over two months. Still, some Republicans used the April 22 Pennsylvania primary and last week’s votes in Indiana and North Carolina to register their unhappiness with the de facto victor.

Some vote for libertarian Texan Ron Paul, who has refused to quit the race and has racked up more than one million votes, according to his campaign.

Other Republicans keep voting for former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney, and former governor Mike Huckabee of Arkansas — both markedly more conservative than McCain — although both have long since dropped out of the race and endorsed him.

Spin City

From the Washington Post:

NEW YORK — Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) defended his attacks against Sen. Barack Obama (D-Ill.) during his appearance tonight on Comedy Central’s “The Daily Show With Jon Stewart” and suggested he might pick a fictional character from NBC’s “The Office” as his vice president.

Marking his 13th appearance on the show, McCain parried with Stewart on questions ranging from his Secret Service detail to his relationship with President Bush. The senator joked that he decided to announce his vice presidential choice on tonight’s show: Dwight Schrute, the assistant to the regional manager (or “assistant regional manager,” if you ask Schrute) in the Scranton branch of the faux Dunder Mifflin paper company.
