Maybe Denny’s has a small room in the back….

From Phoenix Business Journal:

A Tuesday fundraiser headlined by President Bush for U.S. Sen. John McCain’s presidential campaign is being moved out of the Phoenix Convention Center.

Sources familiar with the situation said the Bush-McCain event was not selling enough tickets to fill the Convention Center space, and that there were concerns about more anti-war protesters showing up outside the venue than attending the fundraiser inside.

Getting Back to Fundie-mentals

LOS ANGELES (MarketWatch) — John McCain on Thursday rejected the endorsement of televangelist John Hagee after it was reported that the pastor once argued the Nazis operated on God’s behalf to root out Jews in Europe and get them to Palestine.
McCain’s rejection of Hagee was followed by the pastor’s withdrawal of his endorsement of the Arizona senator. Hagee had said in March that McCain sought his endorsement, but McCain has found himself repudiating a number of controversial remarks made by the minister since then.

From the House to the Big House

From The Hill:

If Rep. Vito Fossella (R-N.Y.) is unable to reach a deal with prosecutors on his DUI arrest, he will likely have to serve five days in jail before the end of the year, making him only the fourth sitting member of Congress to be locked up following a criminal conviction and dragging his troubles back into the spotlight just as Republicans were counting on them having vanished.

Not since Rep. John Dowdy (D-Texas) was sent to prison for his 1972 conviction for bribery, obstruction of justice and perjury has a sitting member of the House been sentenced to jail or prison following a criminal conviction, according to the House historian.

McChimpy

From Time:

The Democratic strategy for beating John McCain is pretty simple. Its principal element: Tie McCain to President Bush, no matter how hard he struggles to break free.

Last week illustrated the maneuvering over Bush. McCain started the week with a speech on global warming, where he broke with the President. By the week’s end, though, McCain had been drawn into a fight over Mideast policy between Barack Obama and the White House, with McCain taking Bush’s side. Obama knows that voters do not yet trust him on foreign policy. But he also knows that they are even more wary of what Democrats call “a third Bush term.”

Boehner Rubs His Crystal Balls

From The Hill:

House Minority Leader John Boehner (R-Ohio) is backing off his bold prediction that Republicans will gain seats this November.

A confident Boehner told reporters in April that once voters heard the Republican message, the GOP would put on a strong showing in the fall.

“I think we are going to gain seats this year. Period,” he said at the time.

Six weeks and three special-election losses later, a spokesman for Boehner attempted to tamp down expectations.

It’s Saudi Duty Time!

From Freep (FREE PRESS NEWS SERVICES):

RIYADH, Saudi Arabia — Saudi Arabia’s leaders said Friday they see no reason to increase oil production until customers demand it, apparently rebuffing President George W. Bush amid soaring U.S. gasoline prices.

It was Bush’s second personal appeal this year to King Abdullah, head of the monarchy that rules this desert kingdom that is a longtime prime U.S. ally and the world’s largest oil exporter.

Sometimes I wish the writers’ strike was still going on

From The Caucus at The New York Times:

Senator John McCain chased after the youth vote in two cameo appearances on Saturday Night Live by joking about his age – he is 71 – and sparing viewers the sound of him crooning a medley of Barbra Streisand songs, as he did when he hosted the comedy show in 2002.

“Good evening, my fellow Americans,’’ Mr. McCain said in a political ad parody on this Saturday’s show. “I ask you: what should we be looking for in our next president? Certainly, someone who is very, very, very old.”
