2 Decades of Decadence (or should that be Deca-dunce?)

From The Guardian:

This week, Human Events, which has been “leading the conservative revolution since 1944”, is celebrating the 20th-anniversary of Rush Limbaugh. Limbaugh, of course, is the right-wing radio monologuer who has “remade American politics”, according to Karl Rove, or is a “big fat liar” as Al Franken has called him, in homage to the man’s own distinctively rebarbative style. A distinctively American phenomenon, his partisan rants would lose any British station broadcasting him its license.

Ad-nausea

From The Washington Post:

RACINE, Wis., July 31 — In a celebrity-driven culture that has left little space for John McCain, the Republican presidential candidate has decided to go tabloid.

By featuring Paris Hilton and Britney Spears in an attack ad against Barack Obama, the senator from Arizona has risked charges of silliness to draw attention to his frequently overshadowed campaign.

Duel: Speeches at 10 Paces (if they won’t get those fancy $520 shoes all dusty, Captain Underpants)

From CBS News:

(SPRINGFIELD, MO.) – Forget negative ads and attacks on the stump, Barack Obama went back in time and challenged John McCain to an old fashioned duel.

Bilked Alaska

From the Los Angeles Times:

WASHINGTON — The indictment of Sen. Ted Stevens (R-Alaska) on corruption charges Tuesday throws into question his grip on a Senate seat he has held for decades and offers Democrats a chance to strengthen their hold on Congress.

Stevens, the longest-serving Republican in the Senate and a towering figure in Alaska’s political history, was indicted by a federal grand jury here on charges that he concealed hundreds of thousands of dollars in gifts from one of the state’s most powerful employers. The indictment accuses Stevens, 84, of accepting more than $250,000 in improvements to his Alaska home, as well as other gifts such as a gas grill and a new Land Rover, from VECO Corp., an oil field services company.

Gonzogate: Department of Just Asses

Oh, kids! I had something else planned for this evening, but when I got home, I noticed that there was news of Gonzogate, and you know I just cannot resist a Monica Goodling story! Sorry that this is a bit of a rush job.

From the Los Angeles Times:

WASHINGTON — Top aides to former Atty. Gen. Alberto R. Gonzales employed a political and ideological litmus test to weed out candidates for career and other positions at the Justice Department, an internal department report concluded Monday.

The audit by the department’s Office of Inspector General and Office of Professional Responsibility concluded that former Gonzales aides Monica Goodling and Kyle Sampson violated department policies and federal civil-service laws.

Ranch Window Dressing

And then we got a housing issue, not in Houston – evidently not in Dallas, because Laura’s over there trying to buy a house today. I like Crawford. Unfortunately, after eight years of asking her to sacrifice, I am no longer the decision-maker. She’ll be deciding.

Like anyone really bought the whole rancher thing, Chimpy?
