Rethuglican Pie Fight!

From The Times Leader:

WASHINGTON — The conservative vs. moderate split threatening to rupture the Republican Party played out across the airwaves Sunday, with Colin Powell and Tom Ridge denouncing shrill and judgmental voices they say are steering the GOP too far right. Karl Rove challenged Powell to lay out his vision and “back it up” by helping elect Republicans.

At stake is the GOP’s status as a major party, Powell and Ridge suggested.

“I believe we should build on the base because the nation needs two parties, two parties debating each other. But what we have to do is debate and define who we are and what we are and not just listen to dictates that come down from the right wing of the party,” said Powell, the nation’s top military officer under President George H.W. Bush and later secretary of state for President George W. Bush.

Dick Cheney and Rush Limbaugh have openly mocked Powell as a Republican in name only, citing his endorsement of Democrat Barack Obama over Republican John McCain in last year’s presidential race.

Powell reaffirmed that he is a solid Republican and said the GOP must be more inclusive or risk giving Democrats and independents the chance to scoop up disaffected moderate Republicans.

Fellow GOP moderate Ridge, the former Pennsylvania governor and homeland security secretary under George W. Bush, said if the GOP wants “to restore itself, not as a regional party, but as a national party, we have to be far less judgmental about disagreements within the party and far more judgmental about our disagreement with our friends on the other side of the aisle.”

Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, a potential presidential candidate in 2012, insisted he didn’t want to pick a fight with Cheney. But he said: “I think Republicans are going to be very foolish if they run around deciding they’re going to see how much they can purge us down to the smallest possible base.”

  1. The repubs need to come together and start acting like rational level-headed leaders rather than immature bullies who would prefer schoolyard brawls to intelligent debates.

  2. Powell and Ridge, an army general and a marine being besieged as always by chickenhawks. Did anyone see Jesse Ventura go through Fox and fiends like a buzzsaw? — it was highly amusing and I never realized Jesse the Body had as much on the ball as he does. Rove and Mt. Rushmo calling out common sense GOP War vets is just perfect. Is Karl going to connect them to Osama now ? I’ll be Max Cleland is getting a kick out of this.

    • hey rastamick! 🙂
i think picking rushbo over powell was one of the most stupid things cheney has ever done. he provided a talking point for months, if not years, to come. rove backing him up and most of the other rethugs remaining silent reinforces that the rethugs are the party of exclusion, not inclusion. the tent just keeps getting smaller and smaller. throw in the pussy galore reference to nancy pelosi, and they might as well fold up the small shred of canvas and go home.

  3. The two party system has proven a failure time and again in American politics, especially when the Rethugs got greedy and wanted to rule everything. They’ve brought the greatest nation on earth to it’s knees, and are too arrogant even now to take adult responsibility for their catastrophic failings.

What we need are real American statesmen and women who will put country before party, before “left and right” pigeon-holing, which is the new paradigm in American politics; and transcend the old politics of partisanship and egomaniacal greed and stupidity.

  4. Well, at least they made it easy for us sane people to choose a side.
I love that they’re eating their own. Bon appetit, assholes.

  5. I wonder if they will stop the infighting for a moment to “unite” in opposing Obama’s choice of a new “Supreme” (Court Justice)???

Ironic Bush 41 nominated her to a Federal Bench judicial position back in 1991!

Besides– who wants to “win” the contest of who Cheney thinks is more “republican”- the winner would already be a loser…. eh?

    • i hope they don’t stop fighting! i’m having too much fun with it!

i think that all the outliers (or out-liars) like rush limpdick and the fanatical fringe goopers will go nuts in dissing sotomayor. however, i think most of the rethug senators will be afraid to go after her too much. i imagine those from the deep south might throw some barbs, but those from states with large hispanic populations will tread very lightly.

what i found interesting was that larry klayman from freedom watch is fine with her. he hates dems.
