From Joan Walsh at Salon:
[…] Tuesday night on CNN’s “Larry King Live,” rising GOP shill/star Liz Cheney refused to denounce the “Birthers” — the right-wing fringe movement devoted to denying (for a changing array of reasons) that Obama is eligible to be president. Instead, Cheney defended the Birthers by blaming Obama for their rage.

From THE MILEHIVE:
Asked what efforts he’s undertaking to include minorities in the Republican Party, Michael Steele, the party’s new chairman, replies, “My plan is to say, ‘Y’all come, because a lot of you are already here.'” He adds laughing, “I got the fried chicken and potato salad, OK.”
Seriously, Steele, the first African American chairman of the national GOP adds, “the goal of this party has been, from its inception, about inclusion.”
Steele made the remarks in Illinois on July 8 to citizen journalist Cameron Cowan, a contributor to MileHive.com, a sister site to dscriber.com.

White men were 100% of the people that wrote the Constitution, 100% of the people that signed the Declaration of Independence, 100% of the people who died at Gettysburg and Vicksburg, probably close to 100% of the people who died at Normandy. This has been a country built basically by white folks, who were 90% of the nation in 1960 when I was growing up and the other 10% were African-Americans who had been discriminated against.

From Talking Points Memo:
The fact that John Yoo was the only Justice Department OLC [Office of Legal Counsel] official who was “read into” the surveillance program — even though he wasn’t the head of OLC at the time — has already been noted by others looking through the inspectors general report on the program released last week.
But one excerpt from the report is worth paying particular attention to, since it underlines the special role that Yoo came to play on the White House’s behalf.
Referring to Jay Bybee, who ran OLC at the time and therefore was Yoo’s supervisor, the report says:
Bybee described Yoo as “articulate and brilliant” and said he had a “golden resume” and was “very well connected” with officials in the White House. Bybee said that from these connections, in addition to Yoo’s scholarship in the area of executive authority during wartime, it was not surprising that Yoo “became the White House’s guy” on national security matters.

From The Washington Post:
A Republican proposal to halt spending on federal stimulus projects has prompted a partisan dustup this week in Arizona, where defeated GOP presidential candidate John McCain has waded into the fight with his old Democratic rival, Barack Obama.
The conflict began after Arizona’s junior senator, Republican Jon Kyl, who has called President Obama’s economic recovery plan ineffective, wrote on his Senate website last week that the government should “cancel the rest of the stimulus spending.” Kyl repeated the suggestion during a talk show appearance Sunday.
And they keep on electing these people?

Justice [Sandra Day] O’Connor has often been cited as saying that a wise old man and wise old woman will reach the same conclusion in deciding cases. I am not so sure Justice O’Connor is the author of that line since Professor Resnik attributes that line to Supreme Court Justice Coyle. I am also not so sure that I agree with the statement. First, as Professor Martha Minnow has noted, there can never be a universal definition of wise. Second, I would hope that a wise Latina woman with the richness of her experiences would more often than not reach a better conclusion than a white male who hasn’t lived that life.–Judge Sonia Sotomayor, 2001
But I can just tell you one thing: If I had said anything remotely like that, my career would have been over.–Lindsey Graham, Senate Judiciary Committee confirmation hearing, July 13, 2009
So true, Lindseypoo! In fact, you were a Latina, I’m very sure you never would even have had a Senate career, as South Carolina likes its senators male and white. But just imagine, Lindseypoo, the possibilities if you were a Latina! You could be a star!
