There’s not enough spackle and duct tape in the world to repair her image

WASHINGTON (CNN) — Longtime Democratic strategist Paul Begala hammered former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin on Friday — calling her “flaky and an intellectual lightweight.”

Original DVD cover

Begala was asked on CNN’s “The Situation Room with Wolf Blitzer” to respond to a Politico story in which former House Speaker Newt Gingrich outlined several ways for Palin to repair her image.

Although Begala called Gingrich “a brilliant political strategist,” he said giving advice to Palin is an exercise in futility.

“Here’s the problem,” said Begala, a CNN contributor. “He is trying to treat her like a serious person. She is not. OK? She is about half a whack job. She does not have the intellectual heft of Newt Gingrich or almost anyone else in the Republican Party, and I think she has proved that.”

He continued: “I admire Newt Gingrich for pretending that she is a serious person. But Sarah Palin has proven herself to be flaky and an intellectual lightweight.”

Conservative journalist Terry Jeffrey, appearing alongside Begala, defended Palin for having “rock solid principles.” But he said Palin needs to be more aggressive in opposing the president’s policies. At this point, Jeffrey said, “I think it’s not proven” she can go toe-to-toe with President Obama.

  1. Begala’s right; Princess can’t hold her own intellectually with Obama. About the only way she could beat him is in a one-on-one basketball game, and even then I’d bet money on the President.

Speaking of intellectual lightweights, Michele Bachmann is now making noises about running for President in 2012. Now, that would be an even match for Palin!

    • princess can’t hold her own intellectually with a door knob. she’s ignorant and about as unintellectual as one can be, and it’s about time people started calling her what she is. begala was right on the money.

  2. jeb

The sad part is that this would even be a news flash to anyone. I think it took me less than 24 hours after her national debut to figure out that there was room for rent and that CU had pulled a Poppy Bush.

  3. jeb

Dang, Nonnie it happened again. I may have to see a doctor about this:

“You are posting comments too quickly. Slow down”

    • maybe we need to buy you one of those outdoor bathtubs. i don’t know how they work, but according to the commercials, they seem to fix that sort of problem.

      • jeb

An outdoor bathtub? Wait, you mean the cold showers are wrong? I really have to stop listening to the internets for my cures. Dammit, I’m doing it again!

  4. “Rock-solid principles”??

Asked for her personal views on evolution, Palin said, “I believe we have a creator.” She would not say whether her belief also allowed her to accept the theory of evolution as fact. “I’m not going to pretend I know how all this came to be,” she said.

Wow; that’s about as solid as frickin’ quicksand… even if it’s just her supposed religious faith.

    Another great cover, nonnie.

    • he got her principle mixed up with her skull. both are rock-hard, so they’re easy to get confused. 😉

    • jeb

She’s a principled quitter. Instead of standing on her principles, she quits on them (as well as those who bothered to vote for her).

Someone needs to buy that lunkhead a dictionary. Just saying someone has “rock-solid principles” is no more accurate than claiming to be a Maverick makes one all Mavericky.

      • i don’t understand why anyone would defend her after she left them in the lurch. according to her, every politician who has any kind of term limit should quit, as they are lame ducks.

  5. “Accept the theory of evolution as a fact.” — do you know what you just said? I think not. A theory is precisely NOT a fact, so it cannot clearly ever be accepted as one until it attains that realm of scientific knowledge as a fact.

As for this post and the rest of the replies. Have you ever considered that the Governor doesn’t care what the likes of Begala or Dowd or Sullivan say? If that hasn’t sunk in yet, you will probably get it eventually.

Finally, as for her all your criticism of her intellectual power, the President defended himself during a townhall against her Facebook posting regarding the draft legislation instituting death panels (which the Senate later removed from its version) and Dr. Emanuel clarified that his thinking had “evolved” after being pummeled by the Governor in another Facebook note. Now the Senate is retreating from the Government insurance option, again called for by the Governor in her Facebook note. So go ahead with your intellectual incest, keep thinking what you are thinking; it doesn’t matter. The next thing to vanish is cap and trade, and I seem to remember the Governor writing about that as well.

    • Ummm … yeah …

Gov. Palin got enough kool-aid-drunk idiots scared that the bill had to be changed. It doesn’t mean that Gov. Palin was dealing with reality, it just means that in a democratic state large numbers of ignorant and misinformed people still have power.

    • i hope you’ve considered that i don’t care what you say. anyone who thinks princess sarah is intelligent is not worth wear and tear on my keyboard.

    • Author: pelinore

      Dear Palinore:
      You said:
“Accept the theory of evolution as a fact.” — do you know what you just said?

Of course I do. The word “evolution,” when used in the phrase “theory of evolution,” refers to the combination of the underlying facts, and the theory that explains them. But it is also frequently used to refer to one or the other, so perhaps you could exercise a little more care next time to determine the meaning, without resorting to dogmatic stupidity.

      I think not.

I can tell. But. Do go on….

A theory is precisely NOT a fact, so it cannot clearly ever be accepted as one until it attains that realm of scientific knowledge as a fact.

You’re misinformed. Evolution is both a theory and a fact. Check the Wiki for further explanation.

As for this post and the rest of the replies. Have you ever considered that the Governor…

      Um, that’s ex-governor; she quit.

…doesn’t care what the likes of Begala or Dowd or Sullivan say? If that hasn’t sunk in yet, you will probably get it eventually.

It’s very clear to most of us Palin doesn’t care what her critics say; most of their criticism is far too high above her pay grade. Her narcissism would never allow her to even attempt to fathom how simple it is for even moderately educated, clear thinking adults to discern her ignorant naiveté.

Finally, as for her all [sic] your criticism of her intellectual power, ~(snip of fallacious gobbledegook) …So go ahead with your intellectual incest, keep thinking what you are thinking; it doesn’t matter.

I see from you adulatory blog site that you are currently far too heavily invested in Sarah Palin to ever listen to a voice of reason; but it is instructive to the incestuous like-minded just how far you think it necessary to go to defend her. Good luck with that.

      • 😆 oh, dear terry, you have so much more patience that i. i just assumed that pelinore would not be around to read any responses, as s/he probably doesn’t believe in gravity (it’s just a theory, dont’cha know, you betcha!) and is probably floating near the ceiling, unable to get to the computer monitor.

        • Oh no I dihint!
Actually, the truth never suffers from honest examination, but intellectual dishonesty always does. It indicates that palinore has secret doubts about the trueness of her beliefs regarding Palin, and demonstrating that is worth it for others to see, even if palinore can’t.

  6. Gov. Palin could, in fact, improve her image.

It might involve plastic surgery, changing her name, getting a vocal coach, and such; but you betcha it could be done.

  7. Nonnie, you’re a big Photoshop meanie.

    ;>)

    Excellent work.

    • from the person with the brilliance to create this, i will humbly accept that as a compliment. 😉 i go to your blog often, darkblack, but there are certain blogger sites where i have difficulty leaving comments.

  8. Palin, like many on the far right, is a self-sustaining fusion reactor of shit. Like a miniature sun feeding upon itself for fuel, her feculent fecundity is limitless.

  9. Sorry to bust anyone’s bubble, but she didn’t get anything changed, they were considering taking the money out of the bill for the counseling before she ever wrote her little piece on Facebook.. well I should say had her piece wrote.. She hasn’t got sense enough to turn the damn computer on let alone find Facebook.. To be able to write something and post it like that.. impossible..

It was a thought of how to bring the price down on the entire bill.. a total of 30 billion or so over the 10 years.. that’s why they thought about it coming out.. had nothing to do with Caribou Barbie.. And Begala is correct.. she is a half a whack job..

    • annette,
don’t confuse poor pelinore with facts. at least not until s/he theoretically evolves! 😉

    • Yeah. So how does that explain why the President decided to defend himself against the death panel attack? Are you saying he just didn’t know what the he– was going on in Congress? And if you check statements from the gang of Six I think you will see their reference to the Palin FB uppercut.

  10. Friend of the court

Are you far from the storm, nonnie?

    • i hope so! i’m in the ft. lauderdale area. ana is on the gulf, and it looks like bill decided to vacation elsewhere. i hope he doesn’t change his mind. 😐

  11. I had to laugh — floating somewhere above my computer — good one.

So I see you now have clarified that you meant the fact of biological changes should be accepted as fact rather than the theory accepted as fact. Ok, you were equivocating. As an aside, the theory of evolution as a macro-explanation for the universe will always remain a theory, and a deficient one at that. Why? Because it cannot explain how things started or where the first forms came from.

Funny — it’s called ambition when people are talking about a man politician and narcissism when they are talking about a woman politician. Why can’t women rise up against all the hate against the Governor???

Give me your tired masses yearning for freedom any day of the week, week of the year over the rarified elite who have contempt for this great nation.

    • jeb

Since you’re a Palin defender, perhaps you can explain to me the virtues of someone who would quit on the people who elected her to office.

    • pelinore said:
So I see you now have clarified that you meant the fact of biological changes should be accepted as fact rather than the theory accepted as fact.

Tsk tsk. You didn’t check Wiki did you. Read more carefully. The clarification was for your misunderstanding, not mine.

      Ok, you were equivocating.

No. You were misunderstanding, and still are.

As an aside, the theory of evolution as a macro-explanation for the universe will always remain a theory, and a deficient one at that.

More intellectual dishonesty— or is it willful ignorance? The theory of evolution is not “a macro-explanation for the universe,” any was never intended as one.

Why? Because it cannot explain how things started or where the first forms came from.

What “things”? What “first forms”? More dishonesty. Science deals with phenomena; religion deals with origins, values, and goals. Science is an intellectual yardstick used to measure the material universe, not it’s cosmic origins; it deals only with materials and facts. As such, science continues to destroy the childlike illusions of the misinterpretations of life that you and Sarah believe in.

Funny — it’s called ambition when people are talking about a man politician and narcissism when they are talking about a woman politician. Why can’t women rise up against all the hate against the Governor???

That’s Ex-governor; She quit. And it’s called narcissism whether it’s a man or a woman displaying it. Intelligent women will not “rise up” against “all the hate” because they already recognize Palin enjoys playing the narcissistic victim, as do her supporters.

Give me your tired masses yearning for freedom any day of the week, week of the year over the rarified elite who have contempt for this great nation.

Your intellectual dishonesty is far more contemptible than any supposed contempt of some imaginary elite you fail to name.

      • Yes, usually when liberals go off and adore their theory of evolution they usually mean it as a replacement for theism. So to sum up what you are saying: evolution does not explain how the universe began (I agree), religion proposes an explanation (I agree), science cannot know the origins of the universe (I disagree). The last was to be expected because most liberals are skeptics at heart. They’ve given up on the power of the human mind to know the truth. So they retreat to their corner of the universe where they can develop neat ways to splice genes, experiment with human tissue, and create hybrid humans, all the while letting their souls fill up on all the facts of the world but missing out on the meaning of the world.

        • Humorless how conservatards portend to know so much about “liberals”… You don’t even know what’s in your own heart let alone the hearts of liberals.

The universe has “corners”?? Who knew. And, how do you know?

So, to sum up what you are saying: Naa naa naa naa naa. (I disagree.)

  12. Did Begala actually call her “half a whack job” on air?? What a hoot!!

  13. So how many of you folks commenting have ever lived in AK? Ever visited? Have family there? Here are some observations from a long time resident which I found at the post at http://texas4palin.blogspot.com/2009/08/sarah-palins-governorship-was-about.html:

The comment is a straightforward and compelling point-by-point affirmation of the former governor based on her record and made by one of her constituents, who makes no secret of his identity ( He publicly included his name along with his comment. He is Dewey Whetsell, an author, poet, jazz musician and was for 28 years Chief of the Cordova, AK Volunteer Fire Department. Chief Whetsell (Ret.) now trains first responders and is an emergency services management consultant in Eagle River.

The last 45 of my 66 years I’ve spent in a commercial fishing town in Alaska. I understand Alaska politics but never understood national politics well until this last year. Here’s the breaking point: Neither side of the Palin controversy gets it…It’s not about persona, style, rhetoric, it’s about doing things. Even Palin supporters never mention the things that I’m about to mention here.

1- Democrats forget when Palin was the Darling of the Democrats, because as soon as Palin took the Governor’s office away from a fellow Republican and tough SOB, Frank Murkowski, she tore into the Republican’s “Corrupt Bastards Club” (CBC) and sent them packing. Many of them are now residing in State housing and wearing orange jump suits. The Democrats reacted by skipping around the yard, throwing confetti and singing “la la la la” (well, you know how they are). Name another governor in this country that has ever done anything similar. But while you’re thinking, I’ll continue.

2- Now with the CBC gone, there were fewer Alaskan politicians to protect the huge, giant oil companies here. So, she constructed and enacted a new system of splitting the oil profits called “ACES”. Exxon (the biggest corporation in the world) protested and Sarah told them “don’t let the door hit you in the stern on your way out.” They stayed, and Alaska residents went from being merely wealthy to being filthy rich. Of course the other huge international oil companies meekly fell in line. Again, give me the name of any other governor in the country that has done anything similar.

3- The other thing she did when she walked into the governor’s office is got the list of State requests for federal funding for projects, known as “pork”. She went through the list, took 85% of them and placed them in the “when-hell-freezes-over” stack. She let locals know that if we need something built, we’ll pay for it ourselves. Maybe she figured she could use the money she got from selling the previous governor’s jet because it was extravagant. Maybe she could use the money she saved by dismissing the governor’s cook (remarking that she could cook for her own family), giving back the State vehicle issued to her, maintaining that she already had a car, and dismissing her State provided security force (never mentioning — I imagine — that she’s packing heat herself). I’m still waiting to hear the names of those other governors.

4- Now, even with her much-ridiculed “gosh and golly” mannerism, she also managed to put together a totally new approach to getting a natural gas pipeline built which will be the biggest private construction project in the history of North America. Now one else could do it although they tried. If that doesn’t impress you, then you’re trying too hard to be unimpressed while watching her do things like this while baking up a batch of brownies with her other hand.

5- For 30 years, Exxon held a lease to do exploratory drill[ing] at a place called Point Thompson. They made excuses the entire time why they couldn’t start drilling. In truth they were holding it like an investment. No governor for 30 years could make them get started. This summer, she told them she was revoking their lease and kicking them out. They protested and threatened court action. She shrugged and reminded them that she knew the way to the court house. Alaska won again.

6- President Obama wants the nation to be on 25% renewable resources for electricity by 2025. Sarah went to the legislature and submitted her plan for Alaska to be at 50% renewables by 2025. We are already at 25%.

    • Nonnie, your SPAM filter isn’t working.

      • Maybe Nonnie is in favor of a little free speech now and then. So I say “Be you blithe and bonny; Converting all your sounds of woe; into Hey Nonnie, Nonnie.”

        • Why am I not surprised you won’t distinguish between SPAM and free speech. “Just an aside”: cleverness is not a substitute for character.

          • So when has truth become spam? I noticed not one of you has attempted to take on even one of the points made by the AK guy quoted above. If you prefer I just make the points directly would that make it non-spam?

            • nobody here is obligated to explain anything to you or refute any crap you copy from somewhere else. i won’t waste my time. anyone who thinks princess sarah is anything more than an ignorant narcissistic twit is dumber than she is and not worth my time.

  14. nonnie – to be fair, Sarah has way bigger boobs than what your picture indicates. Let’s try to keep it fair and balanced.

    • it’s a bulky jacket, tannerleah. she usually doesn’t wear anything that modest, but this picture was taken when she was smuggling all those rethug-paid-for clothes back to alaska. it’s amazing what she could fit under a jacket and skirt.

  15. Dusty

I love the little graphic the best..padded situation room..W00T! 😉

  16. I have to hand it to ya Nons~ for a post titled “full of shit” you sure stirred it up…. with an ex guvnah defender & all.

Be careful, she’ll sue your ass, because, well, now she has the time.

The biggest question for me is, if (when?) her book deal falls thought will Sarah be on unemployment?

Will she become a community organizer?

Maybe she go into cosmetics & open up the Pitbull Lipstick company made with genuine Alaska soon to be extinct whale blubber?

    Colors can include:

    Embarrassment red
    Reality is annoying Brown
    Barefoot baby pink
    GOP shades of gray….

    • 😆 it’s amazing which posts will suddenly bring the whackadoodles out of the woodwork. i wonder why they spend so much of their time trying to convince people of their crapola by invading a site that is very apparently not going to be sympathetic.

i’m here for the suing, princess sarah. have your people call my people.

if she needs some money, she can always open up her own consignment shop and sell all those clothes she got from the campaign. she can have a cosmetic counter in the store complete with makeup and the trowels to apply them. i certainly hope that one of the pitbull lipsticks will be a lovely shade of quit me pink. 😉 you betcha! 😉 you betcha! 😉 you betcha! 😉 you betcha! 😉

  17. Well Nonnie, I have to say, at least with all your insults you don’t go that step further into downright meanness and nastiness. I’ve seen stuff written about the former Governor that is really shocking.
