How Can We Miss You When You Won’t Go Away?

From the Los Angeles Times:

South Carolina’s lieutenant governor on Wednesday called for the resignation of Gov. Mark Sanford, citing “serious misconduct” and “serious distractions” that have stemmed from Sanford’s extramarital tryst with an Argentine woman.

But Sanford declined to step down, calling his understudy’s move “pure politics, plain and simple.”

Lt. Gov. Andre Bauer, who, like Sanford, is a Republican, said that he was in fact trying to depoliticize the deliberations over the fate of Sanford, who is facing potential impeachment.

Bauer is one of a handful of Republicans expected to run for governor in the coming months; he could ostensibly gain an advantage if he were to fill in the remainder of Sanford’s term, although he said Wednesday that he would not seek his party’s nomination for governor in 2010 if Sanford resigns.

…snip…

Sanford revealed in June that he had visited his lover in Argentina after leading people to believe he was hiking the Appalachian Trail. Within hours, the governor, a rising star among conservatives, became a favored punch line for late-night comedians.

His taxpayer-funded trips have also come under scrutiny, and Sanford said this month that his political career was over. Also this month, Jenny Sanford and the couple’s four sons moved out of the governor’s mansion in Columbia.

Impeachment would require a two-thirds vote of the full House and, after a trial, a two-thirds vote of the Senate.

A majority of state Republican senators have called upon Sanford to leave office. South Carolina’s largest newspaper, the State, reported that the House Republican caucus would discuss impeaching Sanford at a retreat this week in Myrtle Beach.

Sanford’s term, his second as governor, expires in January 2011. Over the years, his relationship with Bauer — like his relationship with a number of South Carolina Republicans — has been rocky.

In a late-afternoon news conference of his own, Sanford said he was “not going to be railroaded out of this office by political opponents.”

  1. What about leaving your office for the sake of your state and constituents? I’m sure they’d love to see you gone as well.

  2. “Randy Sandy” answers to a higher calling, according to him-and yet, a look at his activities indicates that the “calling” he has been answering is considerably lower.

It’s all good though; as a Rushpubliscum, he isn’t required to walk the walk. Being a Rushpubliscum means never, ever having to change your ways.

    • jolly roger! 😀
what a nice surprise to see you over here again! 😀

ain’t it amazing how the holier than thou always turn out to have more dirty laundry than the people they disparage? the higher the pedestals they build for themselves, the louder the squish when they fall off.

  3. I miss him. I mean, I keep flinging things at his head and they never hit the target.

    • you might have hit him a few times, z, but since there is nothing inside to block projectiles, your missiles might have gone in one ear and out the other. 😉

  4. Dusty

Great title for the post Nonnie!

I am so tired of Marky Mark. That fuckwit needs to get his ass out of politics..but as a member of “The Family” they have all been told they are the ‘chosen’ and sadly his ass believes it.

Rachel has been keeping us up to date on the C Street group of hypocrites. I love her for that and all she does to expose the fuckery of the extreme rightwing nutters.

    • it amazes me how he has no shame whatsoever. no doubt, it’s because the c street freaks have told him how special he is. when he poops, he’s probably convinced himself there is no odor whatsoever.

  5. I wish it didn’t shock me to see Sanford going from embarrassed and contrite to “nobody’s gonna railroad me out of office.”
I guess it took him a moment to work through the shame and self-pity and regain his self concept as a strong leader, chosen by God to represent the crackers of South Carolina.
The real hero in this slimy story is his wife, who showed some rare Republican-wife grit by dumping him and moving out.
Sanford will be forever remembered as the liar who cheated with some Argentinean bimbo on the state’s dime.
Nobody will ever again “walk the Appalachian Trail” without thinking of that lying scumbag…and chuckling.

    • i don’t trust his wife or her motives. i still think she’s got an eye on running for office. she’s playing the woman scorned role to the hilt. she’s orchestrated most of what’s gone on so far (not the affair, but what happened after she found out). she’s been calling the shots, and she might be the one pushing him to remain in office. the longer he stays, the more attention she gets.
