He’s Dreaming of a Bronze Christmas

From npr:

We know some of you have been worrying about that new bo-tax even if your face can no longer move to express it. But now you can relax: the cosmetic surgery tax is out, but the tanning tax has replaced it. All indoor tanning services will be subject to a ten percent tax should the Senate Democrats’ health bill prevail.

The lobbying effort by those not-so-happy cosmetic surgeons has apparently paid off, and is leaving the tanning salon industry feeling a little singed.

The President of the Indoor Tanning Association […] said in a report Saturday that the move was ironic as tanning has at least some proven health benefit. The amendment seems to have accounted for this, though, and wouldnt tax phototherapy issued by a medical professional, just tanning services purchased by individuals. Its estimated to raise $2.7 billion in that first ten year period.

…snip…

But the health debate’s not over yet. The Senate bill still has to be married with the House bill. The tanning provision might even provide Minority Leader John Boehner, known for his year-round glow and his opposition to new taxes, with some new talking points.

To the tune of O Tannenbaum (O Christmas Tree):

If you’re hoping anyone thinks you have class, you haven’t got a prayer

From Dana Milbank at The Washington Post:

Going into Monday morning’s crucial Senate vote on health-care legislation, Republican chances for defeating the bill had come down to a last, macabre hope. They needed one Democratic senator to die — or at least become incapacitated.

At 4 p.m. Sunday afternoon — nine hours before the 1 a.m. vote that would effectively clinch the legislation’s passage — Sen. Tom Coburn (R-Okla.) went to the Senate floor to propose a prayer. “What the American people ought to pray is that somebody can’t make the vote tonight,” he said. “That’s what they ought to pray.”

Now if he can only figure out how to wrap it…

Washington (CNN) — Senate Democrats braved the aftermath of a blizzard Sunday to continue their push to pass a sweeping health care bill before Christmas.

“You’re ridiculous!”

From THINK PROGRESS:

Back in September, godfather of global warming deniers Sen. James Inhofe (R-OK) announced that he would be going to the U.N.’s climate change summit in Copenhagen this week to present “another view.” “I think somebody has to be there — a one-man truth squad,” he said. His “truth squad” later expanded to three, with Sens. John Barrasso (R-WY) and Roger Wicker (R-MS) joining in.

…snip…

Inhofe did travel to Copenhagen however — with a single staffer and when he got there, all he could muster was an “impromptu” press conference and spent a grand total of two hours in the Danish capital.

Brand Spankin’ Ewww!

Hey kids, sorry, but just another old American Street post. Oh well, it’s kinda fun to see what was going on a while back and remind ourselves when the present troubles in this country really started. Besides, I miss Larry Craig. This post is from May 20, 2008.

Brand Spankin’ Ewww!

Hey, kids! Did you hear that the Republicans are a bit worried about their party these days (well, except for John Boo-Hoo Boehner)? I’ll let Tom Davis (R-VA) tell you about it:

The House Republican brand is so bad right now that if it were a dog food, they’d take it off the shelf.

More from Rep. Davis…

It’s no mystery. You have a very unhappy electorate, which is no surprise, with oil at $108 a barrel, stocks down a few thousand points, a war in Iraq with no end in sight and a president who is still very, very unpopular. He’s just killed the Republican brand.

Well, kids, you know that I am always ready to help out our friends on the other side of the aisle. If they need a new brand, I will help them look!

Condiland

Kids, so sorry, but I’m still feeling craptastic, so I went back to my American Street trough and dug out one of my old favorites. It was originally posted on April 23, 2008. I apologize if some of the links no longer work.

A great big MMMWWAAAHHHHHHHHHH to my dear Raisinettes who have been continuing to visit despite the lack of any new stuff. Hope to be back soon with some new posts and to reply to all of you comments. In the meantime, I hope you enjoy playing Condiland:

A Sweet Little Game for Sweet Little Folks

Hey kids! Are you sick of hearing about Pennsylvania yet? I know I am. I think we need to distract ourselves, and how better than with an old-fashioned board game? I bet the first game that most kids get is Candyland. Well, guess what! There’s a new version out, and I picked one up! Let me share it with you. Welcome to……

The Same Old Song

Hey kids, I’m still feeling lousy, but I wanted to post something. I dusted this off, because it stars three senators i detest–Captain Underpants, Lindseypoo, and Joe McLiebercain (now a/k/a Joe Liebermouse). It was originally posted over at Amercian Street on April 9. 2008. Make sure to wash your hands after reading it so you don’t catch the cooties!

The Same Old Song

Hiya, kids! Did you watch the Petraeus/Crocker hearings yesterday? Me, too. Well, I watched part of it. How long do you have to listen to realize that they were saying nothing new? Well, I don’t know about you, kids, but when I get fed up with the world, I listen to music. A confession here–I am not a music aficionado. I couldn’t tell you who sang what song when, with one exception–I played my CD of the Singing Senators until it wore out. I am broken-hearted that they disbanded so abruptly. Without my Singing Senators CD, I had to look for something else to listen to. Well, guess what! There are some brand new singing senators, and they sing in so many different genres! Follow me, kids, and I will show you my new musical collection…..

If you thought The Kingston Trio was good, wait ’til you hear these guys!

The Mouse That Whored..for the Insurance Industry

From E.J. Dionne at The Washington Post:

Take yourself back to the endless wrangling in Sen. Max Baucus’ Finance Committee – or, more particularly, among his select “gang of six,” including three Republicans, two of whom clearly never had any intention of voting for health-care reform. They negotiated and negotiated and negotiated and negotiated — and got nowhere. Baucus failed to produce a draft bill before the August recess. The Democrats’ summer of discontent and the tea party madness followed.

This, it turns out, was a crucial moment. It set back the schedule for a health-care bill by at least a month, maybe two. There was no urgency in the Baucus process. Now there is urgency. And that gave Joe Lieberman his near dictatorial powers to kill a Medicare buy-in proposal that he had supported as recently as three months ago.
