Another Romance Down the Drain

From TIME:

These days, Republicans have the desperate aura of an endangered species. They lost Congress, then the White House; more recently, they lost a slam-dunk House election in a conservative New York district, then Senator Arlen Specter. Polls suggest that only one-fourth of the electorate considers itself Republican, that independents are trending Democratic and that as few as five states have solid Republican pluralities

…snip…

So are the Republicans going extinct?

…snip…

Samuel Wurzelbacher, better known as Joe the Plumber, tells TIME he’s so outraged by GOP overspending, he’s quitting the party — and he’s the bull’s-eye of its target audience.

Eric Recanter

From WOWOWOW“:

Eric Cantor spent his Sunday morning telling CNN that the Republican Party plans on launching a listening tour.

Said the House minority leader, “What we’re trying to do here today is kick off a series of town-hall forums so that we can get back to listening to the people.”

Conservative radio host Rush Limbaugh didn’t like that one bit and on Monday said the GOP shouldn’t take such a tactic: “We do not need a listening tour. We need a teaching tour. That is what the Republican Party, or, slash, the conservative movement needs to focus on. Listening tour ain’t it.”

Ladies and Gentlemen, We Have a Weiner!

From the Telegraph:

Michael Savage, the American radio presenter, has branded Jacqui Smith, the Home Secretary, a “witch” after he was included on a list of foreigners banned from Britain.

The “shock jock” threatened to sue Miss Smith, claiming that he had been defamed by the list, which ranked him “in the same league as mass murderers”.

The Home Office’s “least wanted” list of 22 people banned from the country also including extremists, white supremacists and Islamic fanatics.

Savage, whose real name is Michael Weiner, was included for “engaging in unacceptable behaviour” by seeking to provoke violence and foster hatred.

It’s Elementary!

From DeadlineUSA Blog at The Guardian:

Will Condoleezza Rice be dogged for the rest of her life by questions about her role in the Bush administration’s harsh interrogation policies?

Last week, Rice was confronted by a student at Stanford University student who asked her if the near-drowning technique known as waterboarding is torture.

Yesterday, Rice was forced on the defensive by a Bethesda, Maryland, grade-schooler.

According to the Washington Post, Misha Lerner, a fourth grader at the Jewish Primary Day School of the Nation’s Capital asked Rice to comment on President Obama’s rejection of Bush-era interrogation methods.

National Council for a New America–Whatta Pizza Work!

From The Washington Post:

A group of prominent GOP leaders yesterday launched an effort to improve their party’s sagging image, hosting an event at which they did not directly attack President Obama, rarely used the word “Republican” and engaged in a healthy dose of self-criticism.

At a pizza restaurant in Arlington, where they officially unveiled the National Council for a New America, party leaders attempted to portray Republicans as sensitive to the concerns of average Americans and to shake off the “Party of No” label that Democrats have tried to affix to the GOP.

House Minority Whip Eric Cantor (Va.) rejected the idea that yesterday’s event, the first in a national series, was about “rebranding” the GOP, but it gave the impression of a party looking for a fresh start. Cantor, former Florida governor Jeb Bush and former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney sat on stools and lobbed criticism at “Washington” and “liberals.” They took few shots at Obama as they pledged to start a “conversation” with voters around the country.

The new, improved GOP! And pizza! What could possibly be wrong? Well, kids, while Cantor, Mittsie, and Jebby represent the same shit we’ve been hearing for decades from the asshole goopers new face of the Rethuglican party, don’t make any mistake as to who’s still writing most of the menus…

No kidding!

From the Los Angeles Times:

On his HBO show, “Real Time With Bill Maher,” the comedian routinely makes vicious fun of celebrities, politicians, presidents and even God. But he’s learned that, for much of his audience, Barack Obama is off limits.

Ex-Specter-atin’

From the Los Angeles Times:

When he announced the other day that he was switching to the Democratic Party, Pennsylvania Sen. Arlen Specter offered to return campaign donations from any contributors who might take offense.

Turns out that includes a lot of his Senate Republican colleagues who lent money to the cause.

Georgia Republican Johnny Isakson was first in line — asking Specter to return his $5,000 leadership political action committee contribution. Other Republicans requesting refunds on behalf of their PACs: Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky ($10,000), Tennessee Sen. Lamar Alexander ($5,000), Texas Sen. John Cornyn ($5,000) and Tennessee Sen. Bob Corker ($5,000).
