Rethuglican School Daze

From the Atlantic:

What began as idle musing by Michelle Malkin and a few other conservative bloggers has since hit Politico, the Associated Press, and the New York Times. Obama’s Sept. 8 speech to public school children, which will be broadcast online and on C-SPAN so classrooms can tune in, started out as about “the need to work hard and stay in school,” reported the AP. But now? Turns out that it’s a secret White House plot to “indoctrinate their children with socialist ideas,” as the Times described the fears of Obama’s critics. As several school districts vow to avoid the speech, a few questions. How did this happen?

They mean what they say….until they take it back

From the raw story:

Either former Bush officials are being pressured to backtrack, or recent flip-flops are just more evidence that they had no convictions in the first place.

In a story entitled Gonzales backtracks on support for CIA probe, The Washington Times‘ Ben Conery reports, “Former Attorney General Alberto R. Gonzales said Thursday that his previous assertion that it was ‘legitimate to question and examine’ charges of CIA abuses of suspected terrorists did not mean he endorsed such an investigation.”

Now for a little Levi-ty

From the Los Angeles Times:

If former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin thought John McCain’s staffers stabbed her in the back when they tried to blame her for his loss last November, one can only imagine what she thinks these days about Levi Johnston, the father of her grandchild.

Johnston, who is weighing the many “celebrity” career options now coming his way thanks to the meteoric rise of his former mother-out-of-law, is in sharper-than-a serpent’s-tooth mode in the October issue of Vanity Fair, where he — how to put this delicately? — rips Palin a new one for what he perceives as her personal failings.

Raise the Error Alert!

From THINK PROGRESS:

Ridge’s Groveling Tour: I Never Meant To Accuse The Bush Administration Of Politicizing Homeland Security

A few weeks ago, former Bush Homeland Security Secretary Tom Ridge was thrust back into the public spotlight with news of his upcoming book, which is out today. Of particular interest was Ridge’s revelation that officials may have pushed him to raise the security alert level for political reasons on eve of Bush’s re-election. An excerpt from the book:

A vigorous, some might say dramatic, discussion ensured. Ashcroft strongly urged an increase in the threat level and was supported by Rumsfeld. There was absolutely no support for that position within our department. None. I wondered, “Is this about security or politics?” Post-election analysis demonstrated a significant increase in the president’s approval rating in the days after the raising of the threat level. … I consider the episode to be not only a dramatic moment in Washington’s recent history, but another illustration of the intersection of politics, fear, credibility and security.

What the Huck?

From Sam Stein at THE HUFFINGTON POST:

Former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee doubled down Sunday on controversial remarks he made last week, in which he declared that Ted Kennedy would have been told to go home and die under ObamaCare.

“What did I say that wasn’t true?” asked the one-time presidential candidate on his Fox News show “Huckabee.”

Huckabee accused “George Stephanopoulos, Time Magazine, the Huffington Post, and scores of liberal bloggers,” of going “berserk” over his suggestion that Kennedy would have been told to take a pain pill for his brain cancer.

Virginia should be reeling

From The Washington Post:

At age 34, two years before his first election and two decades before he would run for governor of Virginia, Robert F. McDonnell submitted a master’s thesis to the evangelical school he was attending in Virginia Beach in which he described working women and feminists as “detrimental” to the family. He said government policy should favor married couples over “cohabitators, homosexuals or fornicators.” He described as “illogical” a 1972 Supreme Court decision legalizing the use of contraception by unmarried couples.

White Elephant

From The Boston Globe:

OTTAWA, Kan. – A first-term Kansas congresswoman said yesterday that her remark about fellow Republicans seeking a “great white hope’’ was not a reference to someone who could challenge President Obama or his political agenda.

…snip…

Representative Lynn Jenkins said she was instead making a comment about GOP leaders in the House and was trying to reassure Republicans that the party has bright leaders there.
