Wally Whirled

Over at the Big Orange, smileycreek asked me if I ever made posters for political campaigns and asked specifically about her congresscritter, Wally Herger.  I didn’t recognize the name until I googled.  Of course, I remembered Ol’ Wally when I read this at the Mt. Shasta News (August 21, 2009):

Redding, Calif. —

Republican Congressman Wally Herger held a health care town hall meeting Aug. 18 at Simpson University in Redding, where a partisan crowd of over 2,000 people loudly cheered Herger’s position that a public option was “unacceptable.”
Although Herger called several times for the audience to “respect each other’s opinions,” those opposed to president Obama’s health care were greeted with cheers while the few in favor were interrupted with catcalls.

…snip…

“Our democracy has never been threatened as much as it is today,” Herger said to a loud standing ovation.

…snip…

One speaker said he could trace his ancestors back to the Mayflower and said “they did not arrive holding their hands out for help.”
“I am a proud right wing terrorist,” he declared to cheers.
Herger praised the man’s attitude.
“Amen, God bless you,” Herger said with a broad smile. “There is a great American.”

You remember Ol’ Wally now, too, dontcha, kids?

According to wiki:

The audience member clarified that he meant to say “right wing extremist”

That makes it so much better, doesn’t it?  Anyhoo, that’s all I needed to want to make a poster about Ol’ Wally.

They’ve Already Infiltrated the Infantry!

From POLITICAL CORRECTION (June 25, 2010):

Speaking on the House floor last night, Rep. Louie Gohmert (R-TX) continued his assault on common sense by making the generally nonsensical claim that terrorists were recruiting pregnant women in order for them to have U.S.-born children who would, several decades from now, attack the United States and “destroy our way of life.”  Gohmert made the comments while discussing border security and Arizona’s controversial new immigration law.

Gohmert: I talked to a retired FBI agent who said that one of the things they were looking at were terrorist cells overseas who had figured out how to game our system.  And it appeared they would have young women, who became pregnant, would get them into the United States to have a baby.  They wouldn’t even have to pay anything for the baby.  And then they would turn back where they could be raised and coddled as future terrorists.  And then one day, twenty…thirty years down the road, they can be sent in to help destroy our way of life.  ‘Cause they figured out how stupid we are being in this country to allow our enemies to game our system, hurt our economy, get setup in a position to destroy our way of life.

La Shriek, C’est Chic!

From THINK PROGRESS :

Former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin (R) lashed out at White House Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel on Twitter earlier this week, telling him “u lie” for saying that many Republicans agree with Rep. Joe Barton (R-TX) that the White House shook down BP to create a $20 billion escrow fund to help Gulf families. Of course, Barton’s sentiment is not unique among conservatives, as Palin herself proved today. Taking to Twitter once again, Palin urged, “GOP: Don’t let the lamestream media suck you into ‘they’re defending BP over Gulf spill victims’ bs…” She followed up by urging her followers to “read Thomas Sowell’s article,” which compares President Obama to Hitler […]

Scam Wow!

From THE ARIZONA REPUBLIC:

A 2007 television infomercial in which former Rep. J.D. Hayworth promoted seminars for “free money grants” from the federal government has resurfaced to shake up his Republican primary challenge to incumbent Sen. John McCain of Arizona.

Hayworth, who lost his seat in Congress in 2006 and now is running against McCain from the right as an anti-spending, “tea-party”-style conservative, appeared in the 30-minute infomercial to help assure viewers that hundreds of billions of dollars could be available to them.

If You Think BP’s Honest, You Don’t Know Dudley…I mean, Diddly!

From The Washington Post:

Meet BP’s Bob Dudley, the human relief well.

This week the Mississippi-bred, wispy-haired Dudley has been paraded through the Gulf coast, the White House and press corps as the new face of BP’s fight to contain the damage the oil spill has unleashed on U.S. shores — and the company’s reputation.

Why do I get the feeling that the emphasis will be on the company’s rep, not the damage that’s already been done and will be done?

General Discontent

From The New York Times:

WASHINGTON — Defense Secretary Robert M. Gates and Adm. Mike Mullen, who had sponsored Gen. Stanley A. McChrystal as commander in Afghanistan, expressed profound disappointment in his judgment Thursday — tempered with thanks for his years in combat — after he was fired from the post. The dismissal followed publication of a profile of the four-star general in Rolling Stone that quoted him and his aides disparaging other officials.

“Honestly, when I first read it, I was nearly sick,” said Admiral Mullen, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.

Delete the Press

From Greg Hinz at CHICAGO BUSINESS:

The Democratic and Republican nominees for the U.S. Senate, Alexi Giannoulias and Mark Kirk, gave their views on planning and environmental issues at a Metropolitan Planning Council lunch on Monday.

But the news was what happened afterward: Mr. Kirk literally ran out the hotel door rather than answer questions about a host of recent reports that he repeatedly has exaggerated his experience and credentials.

Bob’s Your Uncle. No, Wait, Bob’s Your Replacement. No, Wait, Bob’s Your Boat!

From The New York Times:

BP officials on Saturday scrambled yet again to respond to another public relations challenge when their embattled chief executive, Tony Hayward, spent the day off the coast of England watching his yacht compete in one of the world’s largest races.

Two days after Mr. Hayward angered lawmakers on Capitol Hill with his refusal to provide details during testimony about the worst offshore oil spill in United States history, and one day after BP’s chairman said the chief executive would not be as involved in daily operations in the Gulf of Mexico, Mr. Hayward sparked new controversy from afar.

“He is having some rare private time with his son,” a BP spokeswoman, Sheila Williams, said in a telephone interview on Saturday.

Rare private time?  Have you seen how many people work on those yachts?  There were 1754 yachts racing.  Once again, private time?  If you want some private time with your kid, Tony, rent a friggin’ movie and don’t piss off millions of Americans!
