That’s the Spirit!

From JOE KLEIN at TIME:

An astute commenter noted that I passed through Nevada without a word about the Harry Reid-Sharron Angle Senate Race. There is a reason for that. This trip is about things I can actually see with my own eyes. For all intents and purposes, Sharron Angle is invisible–and Harry Reid was out of state for the days I was there. Angle is part of a growing legion of (mostly Republican) ghost politicians.

Tater Tot

From THINK PROGRESS:

Late last week, the Ben Quayle for Congress campaign released a new YouTube video featuring the young Republican blasting the government for supposedly “loading massive debt on the backs of Americans so the politicians can keep spending money on their agenda.”

The video begins with Quayle saying that, while “numbers can be boring, every American can and must understand the numbers I’m about to describe.” He warns that “America is today spending well over 14.5 trillion dollars a year”:

Hope they’ll be sorry that Buck stopped here

From Politicususa:

Out of the madness in a world gone crazy, stepped Ed Buck – straight from central casting as an American citizen standing up for the right to question our candidates. Buck showed up on The Ed Show to take a stand against Republican bully Governor Chris Christie who tried to intimidate him into not asking a question during a Meg Whitman forum in California.

Buck is a retired multi-millionaire looking for someone to vote for in this election. He attended Whitman’s rally wanting to ask Whitman a question (she’s another Republican who is avoiding all questions from media and constituents – this should be a warning), but she wasn’t taking any questions and this upset Buck. Buck simply wanted to engage in the American process of democracy, which of course, ticked off Republican Governor of New Jersey Chris Christie. We have no idea why a Governor from New Jersey was running interference at a forum for candidate for California Governor.

The Devolution of the Rethuglican Party

From Maureen Dowd at The New York Times (Op-Ed):

Christine O’Donnell doesn’t understand why monkeys can’t turn into people right before her eyes.

Bill Maher continued his video torment of O’Donnell by releasing another old clip of her on his HBO show on Friday night, this time showing one in which she argued that “Evolution is a myth.”

Maher shot back, “Have you ever looked at a monkey?” To which O’Donnell rebutted, “Why aren’t monkeys still evolving into humans?”

I wouldn’t vote for her, I love lucid!

(CNN) — American politics has a photogenic new face with a troubled past of bad finances, potential fraud and a flirtation with witchcraft.

A previously unknown conservative activist named Christine O’Donnell is a sudden political sensation and Washington is trying to figure out what to make of her.

“Certainly she has some explaining to do,” Republican Congressman Mike Pence said this week.

The Pledge of a Grievance

From CQ POLITICS:

STERLING, Va. — House Republicans on Thursday officially unveiled what they hope will be a majority-making agenda at a Virginia hardware store warehouse.

The agenda, “A Pledge to America,” calls for a series of reforms, including cutting the size of the federal government, to try to put the country back on a path to prosperity. The agenda, months in the making, only lightly touches on divisive social issues.

Cupcakes? I think Twinkies is more like it!

From Gene Lyons at  Salon:

To the connoisseur of American political theater, the most entertaining aspect of the 2010 election season has been the rise of the right-wing cuties — political celebrities whose main qualification is looking terrific on television. From where I sit, in a comfortable chair in front of the tube, the GOP Cupcake Factor has enlivened an otherwise dreary campaign season.

To put it another way: If you don’t love Christine O’Donnell, you don’t love America. The Republican Senate nominee from Delaware exemplifies a basic truth about politics in the age of cable television: An attractive woman with a glib demeanor and a telegenic smile almost can’t be too crazy.

I don’t think Sharron the Obtuse Angle qualifies as a cupcake. Maybe a stale slice of pound cake that’s only half-baked.

Summers’ Time and the Leaving is Easy

From The Washington Post:

President Obama‘s top economic adviser, Lawrence H. Summers, will step down as director of the National Economic Council after the November elections and return to a teaching post at Harvard University, the White House announced Tuesday.

The departure of Summers, 55, will complete the turnover of three of Obama’s four top economic advisers as the administration struggles with the political fallout of a stubbornly weak economy.
