About That Apology, Ginni…

From The Washington Post:

For nearly two decades, Lillian McEwen has been silent — a part of history, yet absent from it.

When Anita Hill accused Clarence Thomas of sexual harassment during his explosive 1991 Supreme Court confirmation hearing, Thomas vehemently denied the allegations and his handlers cited his steady relationship with another woman in an effort to deflect Hill’s allegations.

Lillian McEwen was that woman.

The State of Virginia

From POST POLITICS at The Washington Post:

It is one of Washington’s enduring mysteries.

No, it isn’t.

Nearly two decades after Anita Hill accused Clarence Thomas of sexual harassment during his fractious Supreme Court confirmation hearing, it remains unclear who was lying.

No, it doesn’t.  It’s very clear that Clarence Thomas is a big stinking liar.

Now, Virginia Thomas, the justice’s wife, has rekindled the controversy by leaving a voice mail message at Hill’s Brandeis University office seeking an apology.

Lati-NO!

From The Guardian:

One of the fiercest races in next month’s midterm elections has turned ugly, with the Nevada senator Harry Reid accusing his Republican challenger, Sharron Angle, of encouraging a TV advert that tries to persuade Hispanics not to vote.

The Spanish-language ad was pulled from TV stations yesterday following an outcry. It said: “Don’t vote this November. This is the only way to send them a clear message – you can no longer take us for granted.”

Angle’s camp denied any connection to the ad, saying she encouraged as many Nevadans as possible to vote. The ad was placed by Robert de Posoda, president of Latinos for Reform.

Minority Report

From POLITICAL HOTSHEET at CBS NEWS:

In a meeting with Hispanic high school students on Friday, Nevada Republican Senate candidate Sharron Angle downplayed her campaign’s use of generic pictures of Latinos to present a negative image of illegal immigrants.

…snip…

Questioned about the ads, which feature somber-looking, dark-skinned men and phrases like “illegal aliens,” Angle told a Hispanic group from Rancho High School that the ads do not necessarily portray Latinos. Furthermore, she told the students confronting her that they themselves do not necessarily look Latino.

In the meeting, first reported on by the Associated Press, a student asked Angle, “Why is it that in all of your commercials you have the image of Latinos? What do you see when you hear, and I quote, ‘illegal aliens?'”

Angle responds: “I think that you’re misinterpreting those commercials. I’m not sure that those are Latinos in that commercial. What it is, is a fence and there are people coming across that fence. What we know is that our northern border is where the terrorists came through. That’s the most porous border that we have. We cannot allow terrorists; we cannot allow anyone to come across our border if we don’t know why they’re coming. So we have to secure all of our borders and that’s what that was about, is border security. Not just our southern border, but our coastal border and our northern border.”

Tweedledumb and Tweedledumber

From the Stir:

Tea Party Senate candidate Christine O’Donnell has had enough Sarah Palin moments in the past few weeks to make the comparison inevitable.

Then in [Wednesday’s] debate with Democratic opponent Chris Coons, the Tea Party candidate for senator in Delaware proved the comparison may be exactly right.

O’Donnell — the “I’m not a witch”; anti-masturbation candidate — flubbed and gaffed, but also appeared sure of herself and her positions even as she seemed uninformed and green. Both women are attractive and have little of substance to say, which serves to make them only more popular with the masses.

Maybe she is the new Palin, after all.

Tea and Crackers

From The Plum Line at The Washington Post:

By some reckonings, Christine O’Donnell had a bit of a rocky time at her Delaware Senate debate with Dem Chris Coons [Wednesday] night. She wouldn’t say whether she believe in evolution, described Coons as a Marxist, and appeared to stumble over her answer on discretionary funding.

And yet, as Dana Milbank notes, in comparison to recent revelations about her and the national caricature that is the result, her performance was clearly an improvement.

If that’s so, there are two people she has to thank for that, and they’re both Sarah Palin advisers: Randy Scheunemann and Michael Goldfarb. They were the ones who took on the job of prepping O’Donnell for the debate, Goldfarb confirms.

Chamber of Horrors

From MEDIA MATTERS:

Glenn Beck, responding to the White House’s request that anonymous donors to the U.S. Chamber of Commerce’s campaign efforts be disclosed, has gone all in in his defense of the group. On his radio show and online, Beck solicited contributions for the Chamber, declaring them “our parents, our grandparents — they are us.”

On his radio show, Beck said “I would like to make this the biggest fundraising day in the Chamber’s history” and told his employees to promote the Chamber on GlennBeck.com and his news site, TheBlaze.com, and “get somebody on the phone” from the group. Beck asked his callers to donate “if you are as sick as I am of this lot” (referring to President Obama), and said that the Obama administration “hates” the Chamber as much “as I hate Woodrow Wilson.”

Hanni-tea Insani-tea

From Howard Fineman at THE HUFFINGTON POST:

WASHINGTON — Christine O’Donnell may not be a witch, but she knows how to use scare tactics to raise money, top Republican strategists and officials here tell me.

They say the Delaware Republican is loudly complaining about how they won’t support her — and they are not — as a way to generate angry, send-them-a-message donations from her Tea Party base.

Specifically, according to two top GOP insiders, she said at a strategy meeting with DC types last week: “I’ve got Sean Hannity in my back pocket, and I can go on his show and raise money by attacking you guys.”
