Michael Steele Puts the Hat in Phathead

From TALKING POINTS MEMO:

Michael Steele introduced a new fashion accessory at today’s Republican National Committee meeting in Kansas City, when, like almost everyone in the audience, the RNC Chairman donned a bright-red “Fire Pelosi” cap. It was something of a theme at the event. And a “Fire Nancy Pelosi” bus tour will begin this fall.

What is it with Michael Phathead Steele and hats? From POLITICO (4/30/09):

Republican National Chairman Michael Steele said Thursday that despite Pennsylvania Sen. Arlen Specter’s recent departure, the GOP remains a party of many hats because “that’s how we roll.”

“I look at it this way,” Steele explained to the hosts of MSNBC’s “Morning Joe.” “The four of us are, let’s say for the sake of this example, all wearing a hat that says ‘GOP.’ All right?”

Listen to Your Mother!

From the LAS VEGAS SUN:

A Las Vegas city councilwoman, a comedian, a lawyer, a restaurant owner, a Realtor and an executive, along with a handful of other Nevada women, gathered today at a downtown café to send U.S. Senate candidate Sharron Angle a message: Don’t tell us how to live our lives.

The women, all working mothers, came together to pledge their support for Democratic Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid and to speak out against his Republican challenger, who has said that one parent should stay home with children because that is the “acceptable” and “right” thing to do.

Sharron’s Real Angle

From JON RALSTON at the LAS VEGAS SUN:

Angle: “What’s happening (in America)..is a violation of the 1st Commandment,” entitlements “make government our God.”

That’s what Sharron Angle, the GOP nominee for the U.S. Senate, said in an April 21 interview with TruNews Christian Radio’s Rick Wiles.

Silly Season

From TALKING POINTS MEMO:

In a three-way Tennessee Republican gubernatorial primary to be held this Thursday, two right-wing candidates have been splitting what Monty Python would call the “silly vote,” leaving Knoxville Mayor Bill Haslam as the de facto “sensible candidate,” and thus making him the frontrunner.

A recent Mason-Dixon poll gave Haslam the lead with 36%, followed by Rep. Zach Wamp at 25% and Lt. Gov. Ron Ramsey with 20%. To be sure, Haslam has tacked right somewhat. For example, he used to be a member of New York City Mayor Mike Bloomberg’s (I) Mayors Against Illegal Guns coalition. But in early 2009 he left the group and joined the National Rifle Association.

But with that said, there’s nothing that Haslam has done or said that compares to the other two.

Crime of Opportunity

From THINK PROGRESS:

Arizona politicians who support the state’s new immigration law have spent the past few months justifying the passage of SB-1070 by pointing to the high levels of crime that undocumented immigrants have brought to their state. However, over the past few weeks, the media has countered their claims of kidnappings and beheadings with reports that the border is “safer than ever” and “one of America’s safest places.” Today, when pressed by guest anchor Harry Smith on CBS’ Face the Nation, SB-1070 supporter Sen. Jon Kyl (R-AZ) called the reports a “gross generalization”:

SMITH: One of the things that’s come to light over the past last couple weeks is that in some of these border towns that were thought to be susceptible to lawbreaking of illegal immigrants. Crime is actually down. Crime in Phoenix for instance is down significantly over the past couple of years.

KYL: Well, that’s a gross generalization. Property crimes are up, certain violent crimes on certain parts of the citizenry are up. Phoenix is a very large source of kidnapping. It’s called the kidnapping capital of the United States…So there’s a great deal of violence and crime associated with illegal immigrants.

Pawlenty of Nuthin’

From The New York Times:

WAVERLY, Iowa — The scene had all the makings of an American Gothic painting from Iowa’s own Grant Wood. A red and white barn served as the backdrop. A cornfield was in the distance. And a politician spoke of making the country great again.

For this loyal Republican crowd, the setting was a familiar one. The opening line was not.

“I’m very thankful for my red-hot smoking wife, the first lady of Minnesota,” said Gov. Tim Pawlenty, pointing to his wife, Mary, who was standing a few feet away.

Oh, those crazy Rethugs and their undying respect for women!
