The Amazingly Hilarious Race!

From the Boston Herald (September 1st):

LIBERAL, Kansas – Colorado gubernatorial hopeful Dan Maes’ murky past in law enforcement in neighboring Kansas has become the latest distraction in his gaffe-ridden campaign.

Maes has claimed he was fired by the police department in Liberal in the 1980s because police and politicians were corrupt, and he told supporters that he worked undercover for state investigators gathering information on a local bookmaking ring.

But the Kansas Bureau of Investigation denies Maes ever worked for them, and Liberal’s police department won’t talk about Maes.

Liberal, Kansas! The irony deities are in fine form!

Cactus Got Your Tongue?

From POLITICAL HOTSHEET at CBS NEWS:

Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer gave what can only be described as a cringe-worthy opening statement in her debate against Democratic opponent Terry Goddard last night.

Politico’s Ben Smith, who picked the video up off YouTube, wrote that Brewer’s performance “reflects either an amazing lack of preparation, or sheer panic.”

The Old Goat and His Goats

From THE TEXAS TRIBUNE:

Dick Armey, the former University of North Texas economics professor, U.S. House majority leader and hired-gun Washington lobbyist, now serves as the chairman of Freedom Works, a nonprofit that bills itself as “dedicated to educating, training, and mobilizing hundreds of thousands of volunteer activists to fight for less government, lower taxes, and more freedom.” With Matt Kibbe, the president and CEO of Freedom Works, he is the co-author of the recently published book Give Us Liberty: A Tea Party Manifesto. A North Dakota native, Armey represented the 26th Congressional District of Texas in the House from 1985 until his retirement in 2003.

Armey talked with the Tribune by phone on Saturday[…]

Shooting the Bull

From THINK PROGRESS:

Reps. Eric Cantor (R-VA; 47 years old), Paul Ryan (R-WI; 40 years old), and Kevin McCarthy (R-CA; 45 years old) have authored a self-aggrandizing new book set to be released next month titled “Young Guns: A New Generation of Conservative Leaders.” The book’s marketing campaign comes with a comical ad trailer, featuring a lofty soundtrack and soaring accolades (“They are ready to make history. Together, they are ‘The YOUNG GUNS!’ Innovative, energetic, forging new solutions.”)

But it’s not supposed to be funny! 😆

Schundler’s Pissed

Okay, I’ll admit that I only covered this story, because I thought of that title for the post, and I really wanted to use it!

From NorthJersey.com:

Bret Schundler didn’t call Governor Christie a liar.

Nor did Schundler say his ex-boss simply ignored the truth when Christie publicly lacerated the Obama administration for rejecting New Jersey’s bid for $400 million in Race to the Top education aid over a petty “clerical error.”

Schundler, fired by Christie on Friday morning, offered a more charitable explanation hours after his dismissal. Christie had simple hit one of his famous “grooves” — a full-scale rant, where anger and bombast bubble to a boil, Schundler explained. It’s in those not-so-uncommon moments when Christie is capable of saying just about anything.

Murfreesboro Becomes Mursboro

From THINK PROGRESS:

For months, conservatives have led a hateful campaign against the expansion of a local Islamic center in Murfreesboro, Tennessee. This campaign has been endorsed by high-ranking Republicans such as the state’s Lt. Governor, Ron Ramsey, who last month, speaking to a group of Republicans in opposition to the mosque, wondered aloud whether Islam was a religion or a “cult” and fearmongered about the mosque trying to bring “Sharia law” to America. Earlier this year, Lou Ann Zelenik, a GOP congressional candidate in Tennessee, campaigned against the Murfreesboro mosque, arguing that it posed a threat to that state’s “moral and political foundation.”

Now, the local press reports that the police are investigating a case of arson that occurred at the construction site of the mosque Friday night:

Mallrat

From POLITICAL HOTSHEET at CBS NEWS:

An estimated 87,000 people attended a rally organized by talk-radio host and Fox News commentator Glenn Beck Saturday in Washington, according to a crowd estimate commissioned by CBS News.

The company AirPhotosLive.com based the attendance on aerial pictures it took over the rally, which stretched from in front of the Lincoln Memorial along the Reflecting Pool to the Washington Monument. Beck and former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin spoke at the rally.
