Frack You!

From THINK PROGRESS GREEN:

On the campaign trail, Rick Santorum says his career since the Senate has been a paid commentary role at Fox News and as a fellow at the Ethics and Public Policy Center. But a mandatory disclosure requirement for presidential candidates reveals something new: Santorum has maintained his lifestyle through a well-paid consulting gig with Consol Energy Inc and a lobbying firm called American Continental Group.

The disclosure, revealed earlier this week, comes as a surprise because Santorum has never mentioned the fact that he works for a lobbying firm, nor do any state and federal lobbying disclosures have him listed as a lobbyist or contractor to such a company.

Consol Energy is one of the country’s largest coal mining companies that also has substantial involvement in hydraulic fracking in Pennslyvania. According to the company’s website, it is “the leading eastern U.S. gas producer and our future growth is centered in the Marcellus Shale.” ThinkProgress has attended multiple Santorum campaign stops, and the former senator almost always spends a few minutes extolling the virtues of fracking in the Marcellus Shale region […]

One of his other moonlighting jobs, his “consulting” position with American Continental Group, reveals more questions about Santorum’s political positions. American Continential Group is a corporate lobbying firm long associated with pushing industry friendly legislation and earmarks.

According to the disclosure, Santorum is paid more than $330,000 for his work on behalf of Consol Energy, American Continental Group, and a public relations firm called the Clapham Group. He was paid $217,000 from the Ethics and Public Policy Center, and $239,000 for his contributions to Fox News in 2010 and the beginning of 2011.According to the disclosure, Santorum is paid more than $330,000 for his work on behalf of Consol Energy, American Continental Group, and a public relations firm called the Clapham Group. This has little to do with this, but I get a giggle every time somebody uses the term “frack”. For us old farts around in the 70s, and loving sci-fi, “frack” (technically, “frak”) is the Battlestar Galactica substitute for … well, the naughty word for “fornicate”. So if Santorum supports “fracking”, he’s suggesting screwing us over, right? 😉

    • you’d think they could have thought of a better word for the procedure than fracking. it’s short for hydraulic fracturing. i guess someone figured that that sounds a bit too violent or something. better sex than violence, right?

  2. For me, the good news is that he doesn’t have a snowball’s chance in South Beach at getting the nomination. Nonetheless, an interesting news bit. .. .but hey … great job on the logos … see, I’ve learned to look. 🙂

  3. Damn, nearly 0 influence = nearly $1mil in grift graft !!

    • they figure that it’s worth a mil to script the asswipe and send him out to faux news to spread their propaganda. we know how faux news watchers don’t do a lot of fact-checking. they believe what they hear, even when they hear it from frothy.

Santorum is improving… Fracking hurts straight as well as gay people…

  5. As if I didn’t have enough reasons to dislike Man-On-Dog.

  6. Alice Carlson

I suppose it’s naive to ask if that’s legal?

    • hello alice,

      welcome to the raisin! 😀

i’m not a lawyer, but i don’t see why it would be illegal. i think you only have to register as a lobbyist if you personally lobby those in federal offices. he might have done that, but the article doesn’t indicate that he did. i think it’s seedy as hell that he didn’t disclose that he was getting paid when he was singing the praises of fracking, but being seedy isn’t illegal. of course, i might be totally wrong.

I have clearly missed my calling in life (or at least a shot at being Mrs. Santorum in possession of a coveted AMEX black Centurion card and wild, unbridled [no, not sex] Neiman Marcus shopping sprees!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!). Frack me!!

This is one reason my girls LOVE Dennis Kucinich. He is a man of modest means and lives quite modestly (last we heard anyway).

    • there’s not a credit limit high enough for me to ever even consider sleeping with that nasty shithead. just the thought of it makes me want to vomit and poke out my mind’s eye with a rusty screwdriver.

  8. How do I get in on this easy big money just for being a know-it-all smartass? And you gotta love the new ad spots that assure us all that there is a mile of rock and dirt protecting our ground water. Good thing all that crap doesn’t move around. They might consider using an organic biodegradeable fracking fluid, let’s say santorum, to do their hydrofracking with. It would be safer for the environment and be a good way to get rid of it.

    • i hate those commercials. they never mention the flaming kitchen faucets. the ceos of those companies should be forced to go on national tv and drink and entire quart of that water. if they want a mixer, they can stir some santorum in.

Ricky is an upright and moral human being and an example to us all. Except of course when it comes to minor things like telling the truth or disclosing what he should. Just like he tried to cover up the fact he’d sold his house in PA and had everything in VA while he was still the Senator for PA. He tap-danced around that until the truth was put in his face. Now he does this on the down-low and extols the virtues of environmental destruction in the pursuit of profits (erp, energy) while just forgetting to mention he’s getting paid to do that. What a shock.

    • i’m just shocked that he’s still in the race. everyone knows that he’s not going to win, and nobody would ever pick him to run as veep. that tells me that his backers are financing him in order to get their filthy lying message out. i guess it’s cheaper than the bullshit commercials they’ve been running.

  10. I just love the Santorum spot behind the “f”….NICE touch.
    And You’re right, I can’t stop Googling.
“his backers are financing him in order to get their filthy lying message out. i guess it’s cheaper than the bullshit commercials they’ve been running.”
…..how true. Why pay for ads when you can get some schmo to schill for you for free on nationally televised debates?

    • i always try to include some santorum in posts about santorum, dc. thanks for noticing it! 🙂

the big corporations are evil, but they’re not stupid. it’s so much cheaper to pay this asswipe to spread their bullshit than paying for expensive tv advertising. it’s like fashion designers giving celebs clothes for free so they’ll say whom they’re wearing when the tv cameras are rolling.

  11. He needs to get his priorities straight. LGBT people are bad, but fracking and the environmental harm involved are all right!? Huh!?

  12. i bet the fracking people dont want the frothy substance all over their equipment – ick

(read that as you want to LOL)
