Bridges to Somewhere

From THINK PROGRESS ECONOMY:

President Obama’s plan to kickstart the economy and put the American people back to work includes investing in the nation’s rapidly deteriorating infrastructure, which, as studies have shown, is in need of as much as $2 trillion in immediate investment just to bring it up to date. In the past, Republicans have agreed that infrastructure improvements are needed, but in the context of economic stimulus and in their effort to remain opposed to anything Obama offers, they have chosen to ignore the nation’s infrastructure and jobs crises. Unfortunately, that approach doesn’t mean either crisis will go away.

Republican leadership has continually blocked efforts by Obama and Congressional Democrats to invest in infrastructure improvements, and as a result, bridges and roadways in their states are crumbling. According to the Bureau of Transportation Statistics, about 12 percent of the nation’s bridges are considered “structurally deficient,” the same rating given to the Minneapolis bridge that collapsed in 2007, killing 13 people.

Scrumbags

From THE IOWA INDEPENDENT:

Thursday, Dallas Morning News editor Bruce Tomaso asked, in a rhetorical sort of way, just what to make of the photos of Gov. Rick Perry getting in U.S. Rep. Ron Paul’s face at this week’s GOP presidential debate.

The photo, taken during a commercial break and circulated by Reuters, shows Perry with one hand clutched on Paul’s wrist, and the other up in a reprimanding wag.

…snip…

The Guardian ran a three-part series of photos from the moment, including a Godfather-like hand gesture and glare that Perry followed with after former Utah Gov. Jon Huntsman stepped in to, possibly, break up the scrum.

Debate of Duh Nation

From POLITICO:

Rick Perry battled a withering barrage of attacks in his first debate as a presidential candidate Wednesday night, at times stumbling in the face of harsh criticism – and difficult questioning – at the POLITICO/NBC debate.

But Perry proved himself to be an aggressive, often caustic debater, waiting only a few moments to go on the attack against his top rival, Mitt Romney, for his jobs record as governor of Massachusetts.

Haley’s Vomit

From scnow (editorial):

Four hundred thirty bucks a night (each!) for hotel rooms.

Fifteen hundred in airfare.

A $25,000 party.

Rooftop dining on a balmy June night in old Paree.

Bill Gates’ most recent business trip?

The new Real Housewives of Europe reality show?

Nope.

Those are all items from S.C. Gov. Nikki Haley’s trip to Paris earlier this summer, where she and her entourage, which included State Senator Hugh Leatherman of Florence, racked up $127,000 (and counting) in bills, some of which will be paid by the taxpayer, according to some dogged reporting by the Charleston Post & Courier.

Drowning Government in a Teacup

From the San Francisco Chronicle:

Columbia, S.C.
The leading Republican presidential candidates spent Labor Day declaring their fealty to limited government as they sought to demonstrate credibility with a Tea Party movement that has seized the political energy of their party.

…snip…

Grim economic news has framed the Republican presidential campaign as a referendum on Obama’s fiscal leadership and a contest about which of the Republican rivals is best positioned to turn the country’s fortunes around.

But the president’s would-be replacements are also preparing for months of political combat among themselves as they seek the Republican nomination. At a wonkish policy forum Monday, five of the Republican candidates offered a preview of the intraparty fight for support from evangelical and Tea Party voters.

Happy Labor Day!

From Charles Wowkanech, president of the New Jersey state AFL-CIO at North Jersey.com:

ON LABOR DAY, we recognize the hard-working men and women who keep our nation running. Yet we must not forget the millions of people who have lost their jobs due to our unprecedented economic conditions.

Regardless of employment status, we all share a common goal to raise a family and provide a better future for our children. It is this aspiration that has built our country’s middle class and has instilled a sense of purpose for generations of American families.

However, something seems to have changed, and the promise of a job and a middle-class life is becoming harder and harder to come by in this country.
