¡Ay Caramba!

From The Trail at The Washington Post:

Republican presidential nominee John McCain suggested this week that he would continue President Bush’s policy of having cool relations with the government of Spain, despite having made starkly contrasting statements to the Spanish press earlier this year saying he looked forward to normalized relations with the NATO ally.

In comments that have caused a kerfuffle in Spain, McCain seemed to lump Spanish Prime Minister Jose Luis Zapatero in the same category as the anti-American leaders of Venezuela, Bolivia and Cuba. McCain’s remarks came during in an English-language interview with Radio Caracol WSUA 1260AM in Miami, part of the Spanish-language radio group Union Radio, conducted Tuesday.

Chimpy chows down, while Captain Underpants wants to raise unemployment numbers!

From The Trail at The Washington Post:

GREEN BAY, Wis. — Republican presidential nominee John McCain elaborated a bit this morning on why he said yesterday that he would fire Securities and Exchange Commission Chairman Christopher Cox if McCain were president, a position later softened to a call for his resignation.

McCain portrayed it as a matter of honor — although he flubbed his payoff line a bit.

…snip…

“My friends, that kind of accountability and responsibility is missing in Washington today,” McCain said, and then he misspoke. “That’s why I believe the chairman of the FEC should resign and leave office and be replaced.”

The FEC, of course, is the Federal Election Commission, which oversees campaign finance laws, and not the financial world.

Now he can look for a younger, prettier, richer adviser

From The Telegraph:

Carly Fiorina, who rose from a secretarial position to become chief executive of the technology giant Hewlett-Packard, made the gaffes in two separate interviews.

First she was asked by a radio host – who had just praised her own business record – that since Mr McCain “thinks Mrs Palin has the experience to be president … do you think she has the experience to run a major company like Hewlett-Packard?”

Miss Fiorina replied: “No, I don’t. That’s not what she is running for.”

Asked later in a television interview about her remark, Ms Fiorina said: “Well, I don’t think John McCain could run a major corporation.”

Miss Fiorina has since had planned television appearances cancelled.

It’s a Miracle!

(CNN) — Sen. John McCain’s senior domestic policy adviser said Tuesday that the BlackBerry mobile e-mail device was a “miracle that John McCain helped create.”

When asked, Captain Underpants laughed and said, “That’s silly! People can’t invent fruit!”

The adviser, Douglas Holtz-Eakin, discussing the nation’s economic woes with reporters, said that McCain — who has struggled to stress his economic credentials — did have experience dealing with the economy, pointing to his time on the Senate Commerce Committee.

Pressed to provide an example of what McCain had accomplished on that committee, Holtz-Eakin said the senator did not have jurisdiction over financial markets, then he held up his Blackberry, telling reporters: “He did this.”

The Ugly Truth

From Richard Cohen at The Washington Post (You might just want to skip this and click over there to read the entire article, kids):

The Ugly New McCain
Following his loss to George W. Bush in the 2000 South Carolina primary, John McCain did something extraordinary: He confessed to lying about how he felt about the Confederate battle flag, which he actually abhorred. “I broke my promise to always tell the truth,” McCain said. Now he has broken that promise so completely that the John McCain of old is unrecognizable. He has become the sort of politician he once despised.

How’s The View, Cindy Lou?

(CNN) –Cindy McCain, wife of Republican presidential nominee John McCain, criticized the media at a weekend fundraiser, telling supporters that the hosts of The View “picked our bones clean.”

Better not let Phil Gramm hear that whining, Cindy Lou!

Their Lips are Moving

(CNN) — Sarah Palin did not visit troops in Iraq, a spokesperson for the Republican vice presidential nominee confirmed Saturday, as new details emerged about the extent of the Alaska governor’s foreign travel.

In July of last year, Palin left North America for the first time to visit Alaskan troops stationed in Kuwait. Palin officials originally said her itinerary included U.S. military installations or outposts in Germany and Kuwait, and that she had visited Ireland.

A Palin aide in Alaska had said Iraq was also one of the military stops on that trip.

[…] in response to questions about the trip, Alaska National Guard officials and campaign aides said Palin did not go past the Kuwait-Iraq border.

In addition, campaign aides also confirmed reports to CNN Saturday that Palin’s time in Ireland on that trip had actually been a refueling stop.
