From MEDIA MATTERS (May 12, 2010):
Joe Scarborough and MSNBC’s Morning Joe cast devoted nearly half an hour today to discussing discredited rumors that Elena Kagan is gay — even while noting that the White House says she isn’t gay and repeatedly acknowledging that most Americans probably don’t “care.”
The discussion occupied much of the first 15 minutes of the show. Despite the fact that there is absolutely no evidence that Kagan is gay and that the White House and Kagan’s friends have unequivocally said that she isn’t gay, Scarborough portrayed the issue as a “bigger question.” Scarborough and Pat Buchanan repeatedly tied the discredited rumors to false claims that Kagan banned military recruiters from Harvard’s campus.
The purported hook for Scarborough’s discussion was the controversy over whether The Wall Street Journal‘s use of a 17-year-old photo of Kagan playing softball was intended to be a reference to the rumors.
Leading off the show, Scarborough said, “Apparently, I didn’t know this, but softball bat symbolizes a certain lifestyle.”
You know, I don’t remember this much scrutiny about Senator Susan Collins, Harriet Miers, or Condoleezza Rice. They’re older than Elena Kagan and unmarried. How do we know that they’re not in…

Do you watch too much TV, kids? So do I. I love sitcoms, and my new favorite is Modern Family. If you haven’t seen it yet, you should. It’s hilarious, yet somehow quite sweet and touching.
Okay, that was just a phony introduction to a bunch of pics I found in my Photobucket and never published. I think I made them, because Distributorcap and I were going to do a joint posting, but we never quite got it all together. Now that DcAp is on hiatus, I thought xIxwould jump on the opportunity to be a lazy ass xwould post them now.

From The Detroit News:
The Rick Snyder gubernatorial campaign took a swipe at fellow Republican candidate U.S. Rep. Pete Hoekstra today, saying he’s inappropriately using the failed Christmas Day terrorist attack at Detroit Metro Airport in an attempt to solicit political donations.
Hoekstra, R-Holland, sent out a fundraising letter today that opens with an account of the incident aboard Flight 253 and closes with this statement: “I know that as governor, my most solemn obligation will be to work every day to make sure that Michigan families are safe … Together, let’s stand up for America, and stand up for Michigan. Please help me fight by making a most generous contribution of $25, $50, $100 or even $250.”

From THE HUFFINGTON POST:
The George W. Bush Institute — the “action- oriented think tank” that is part of Bush’s Presidential Center — will co-produce a public television show hosted by its executive director, Ambassador James Glassman, in a rare convergence of public broadcasting and a partisan research organization.
“Ideas in Action” will premiere in February and will be co-produced by Andrew Walworth, who produces PBS’s “Think Tank.”
Because we all know how Chimpy always surrounds himself with geniuses.

From Entertainment Weekly:
I was wondering, too.
Popeye the Sailor Man, his bulging forearms, and his strength-fortifying can of spinach can be seen on Google’s home page today, doing fans of cartoon art a big favor. Today is the birthday of Popeye creator E.C. Segar, born 115 years ago.
Segar was a newspaper cartoonist, and Popeye was first seen in Segar’s comic strip “Thimble Theater,” starring the sailor, his rail-thin girlfriend Olive Oyl, her brother Castor Oyl, and, eventually, their hamburger-munching pal Wimpy, and Popeye’s rival for Olive, the hulking Bluto.
Oh, okay. Well, kids, this brought to mind a diary I published over at American Street back on February 13, 2008. I thought I’d dust it off for our very own tribute to the Sailor Man. Happy birthday, E.C. Segar, wherever you are. Here’s the diary:
Hi kids! As election fever takes over every conversation, every bullshit-laden package of talking heads trying to sound intelligent news show, and every blog, I thought we should take a minute and remember what we will thankfully be leaving behind. First, though, a tip of the hat to the lovely and talented Friend of the Court for suggesting the theme for this crappy diary humble submission.
Now back to business. We all know that this horrendous era will forever be known as the Chimpy Bush Administration, after this guy….
…but we all know who has the real power and is calling all the shots. It’s this guy…

White men were 100% of the people that wrote the Constitution, 100% of the people that signed the Declaration of Independence, 100% of the people who died at Gettysburg and Vicksburg, probably close to 100% of the people who died at Normandy. This has been a country built basically by white folks, who were 90% of the nation in 1960 when I was growing up and the other 10% were African-Americans who had been discriminated against.

May 28 (Bloomberg) — Toys “R” Us Inc., the largest U.S. toy-store chain, acquired FAO Schwarz to take over the retailer’s flagship Fifth Avenue store in New York and increase its market share.
The company was founded in 1862 by Frederick August Otto Schwarz and his three brothers.
Now when I think of that scene in Big with Tom Hanks and Robert Loggia playing Heart and Soul on the giant FAO Schwarz piano, I’ll be sad. However, kids, the news might have been far worse! Just imagine…

From DeadlineUSA Blog at The Guardian:
Will Condoleezza Rice be dogged for the rest of her life by questions about her role in the Bush administration’s harsh interrogation policies?
Last week, Rice was confronted by a student at Stanford University student who asked her if the near-drowning technique known as waterboarding is torture.
Yesterday, Rice was forced on the defensive by a Bethesda, Maryland, grade-schooler.
According to the Washington Post, Misha Lerner, a fourth grader at the Jewish Primary Day School of the Nation’s Capital asked Rice to comment on President Obama’s rejection of Bush-era interrogation methods.
