Fear Factor: the House of Reprehensibles

From POLITICO:

Sean Hannity believes it. So does House Minority Leader John Boehner. Talk show host Fred Thompson calls it “the dirty little secret” of the health care reform debate.

The focus of their ire is a provision tucked deep inside the House bill that would provide Medicare coverage for an end-of-life consultation once every five years. If a person falls ill with a life-threatening disease, more frequent sessions would be allowed.

Republicans are now using this language as a wedge between senior citizens and Democrats. Boehner and Republican Policy Committee Chairman Thaddeus McCotter (R-Mich.) issued a statement last week saying it “may start us down a treacherous path toward government-encouraged euthanasia” — even though the concept behind the provision has been embodied in federal law since 1990 and has been promoted by Republicans and Democrats for years.

Pants on Fire

From Conor Clarke at the Atlantic:

One of the wackier developments in the recent health care debate has been the sudden return of Betsy McCaughey. Fifteen years ago McCaughey wrote an error-laden piece for the New Republic, a piece the magazine later recanted, that became a rallying cry of the successful effort to kill Clintoncare, and that McCaughey parlayed into a short-lived career as the lieutenant governor of New York. McCaughey’s health-care shtick in 1994 was to brag about having read all 1,000-plus pages of the bill and cite, with Biblical certainty, obscure provisions that made the Clintons look like serial killers.

Rethuglican National Convention in Pictures, Part Deux

There was much excitement behind the scenes at the Rethuglican Convention! There was a lot of planning going on!

kingofthehillrovegrammscheneunemann

All of Captain Underpants’s lobbyists friends and advisers were there, including Karl Rove, Phil Gramm (who kept his hands over his ears, lest there be any whining! 😆 ), Randy Scheunemann, Joe McLieberman, Nicolle “the media sucks” Wallace, Lindsey-poo, and Charlie Black. Captain Underpants snoozes in the background until they wake him up to tell him what he honestly and truly thinks.

Carolina on My Mind

From the Kansas City Star:

In South Carolina, which holds its Republican primary Saturday, former Tennessee Sen. Fred Thompson will be in the elimination position.

Having bypassed New Hampshire and Michigan, Thompson is looking to establish himself, at Huckabee’s expense, as the most appealing candidate to social conservatives in the South. “Our campaign is `all in’ in the Palmetto State,” said Thompson’s spokesman, Todd Harris.

Breaking Wind…I Mean News: Huckabee Announces Healthcare Plan for Seniors!

Mike Huckabee, concerned over health care, has revealed how he will restructure Medicare. It seems that all seniors really need is a good poop. From ABC News:

On MSNBC’s “Morning Joe” Friday, former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee was asked about the fact that former Tennessee Sen. Fred Thompson repeatedly attacked him at Thursday night’s debate.

“I think Fred needs some Metamucil, I think it would help a lot,” Huckabee joked. “He was in a bad mood last night.”

Kids, do you like movies about bloviators?

Chris Matthews in his own words and up his own ass (via Media Matters):

“I think a lot of people pick a president they figure would sort of like them if they knew them. And if you are overweight or have a problem with your diet — and I certainly did for years — you may figure Hillary doesn’t like people like me. She’s looking down on me. What do you think? Howie, she’s looking down on me, that woman. She thinks she’s better than me.”

No, Tweety, people don’t dislike you because of your fat ass. They dislike you because of your fat mouth.

In This Corner….

MANCHESTER, N.H. (AP) — Mitt Romney and John McCain sparred Sunday over their tax and spending records and who was a better agent for change, in the second Republican debate of the final weekend before the New Hampshire primary.

…snip…

McCain had the support of 34 percent of likely voters, up from 27 percent in mid-December. Romney was at 30 percent, down from 34 percent, and former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee — the Iowa caucus winner — was third at 13 percent. Former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani had 8 percent, while former Tennessee Sen. Fred Thompson was in the low single digits.
