Captain Underpants to the Rescue!

From The Washington Post:

A Republican proposal to halt spending on federal stimulus projects has prompted a partisan dustup this week in Arizona, where defeated GOP presidential candidate John McCain has waded into the fight with his old Democratic rival, Barack Obama.

The conflict began after Arizona’s junior senator, Republican Jon Kyl, who has called President Obama’s economic recovery plan ineffective, wrote on his Senate website last week that the government should “cancel the rest of the stimulus spending.” Kyl repeated the suggestion during a talk show appearance Sunday.

And they keep on electing these people?

California Scheming

From the Los Angeles Times:

Under President Bush, California Democrats often felt like Rodney Dangerfield.

But with Barack Obama headed to the White House — giving their party control of both ends of Pennsylvania Avenue for the first time in 14 years — lawmakers from one of the nation’s bluest states are looking to gain more than just respect. They expect to wield more political clout as well.

Not only will House Speaker Nancy Pelosi of San Francisco preside over a bigger Democratic majority with a friendlier president, but Californians will chair four House committees, more than any other state.

Freak Radicals

From Salon:

Oct. 10, 2008 PALMER, Alaska — | On the afternoon of Sept. 24 in downtown Palmer, Alaska, as the sun began to sink behind the snowcapped mountains that flank the picturesque Mat-Su Valley, 51-year-old Mark Chryson sat for an hour on a park bench, reveling in tales of his days as chairman of the Alaska Independence Party. The stocky, gray-haired computer technician waxed nostalgic about quixotic battles to eliminate taxes, support the “traditional family” and secede from the United States.

…snip…

Though Chryson belongs to a fringe political party, one that advocates the secession of Alaska from the Union, and that organizes with other like-minded secessionist movements from Canada to the Deep South, he is not without peculiar influence in state politics, especially the rise of Sarah Palin. An obscure figure outside of Alaska, Chryson has been a political fixture in the hometown of the Republican vice-presidential nominee for over a decade. During the 1990s, when Chryson directed the AIP, he and another radical right-winger, Steve Stoll, played a quiet but pivotal role in electing Palin as mayor of Wasilla and shaping her political agenda afterward. Both Stoll and Chryson not only contributed to Palin’s campaign financially, they played major behind-the-scenes roles in the Palin camp before, during and after her victory.

F%#k/Off Abram/Off and All Your Buddies!

From U.S News & World Report:

In ordering the Interior Department’s former No. 2 man to serve time behind bars, a federal judge sent a message yesterday that public officials must be held accountable for their misdeeds. “Sir, you held a position of trust,” District Judge Ellen Huvelle told J. Steven Griles as she sentenced him to 10 months in prison. “And I will hold you to a higher standard.”
…snip…
Griles, Interior’s deputy secretary from 2001 to 2004, pleaded guilty in March for lying to Senate investigators about the nature and extent of his relationship with convicted lobbyist Jack Abramoff.

Just a little side note–isn’t U.S. & World Report a little redundant? Last time I checked, the U.S. was a part of the world, despite Chimpy & Co.’s best efforts.
