A Tale of Two (P)Ricks

From THINK PROGRESS:

Yesterday, ThinkProgress caught Gov. Rick Perry (R-TX) on video threatening Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke during a trip to Iowa. Perry, the latest Republican to announce a campaign for the White House, called any effort by the Fed to provide monetary stimulus “treasonous in my opinion” and added that he would treat Bernanke “pretty ugly down in Texas.” On CNN this afternoon, former Sen. Rick Santorum (R-PA), another candidate in the race, slammed Perry’s comment and said any suggestion of treason is pure politics:

When Parry Met Silly

From The Telegraph:

[Rick] Perry, who got into the 2012 race on Saturday, partly overshadowing Representative [Michele] Bachmann’s win at the Iowa Straw Poll in Ames, accepted an invitation to the Black Hawk County Republican Party dinner in Waterloo, Iowa last week.

Once she heard the Texas governor would be attending, aides to Mrs Bachmann, who was born in Waterloo, contacted the organisers to say that she would like to speak too. This set up a joint appearance that one Iowa politician predicted would be like the “shoot-out at the OK Corral”.

There was no confrontation but Mrs Bachmann’s move backfired. “She didn’t sit down to visit with us and eat with us,” said Mel Shaw, 57, one of the attendees.

“She came into the room like she was Madonna or something, a big star appearing before all us little people. She didn’t want to answer questions. That’s not the way we do politics here.”

Schtick-on-a-Stick

From POLITICO:

Iowa Rep. Steve King called Michele Bachmann’s straw poll victory a testament to her “force of personality,” and predicted that newly-declared presidential candidate Rick Perry would have to work harder as a result of the outcome in Ames.

Asked if Bachmann’s win would make it harder for Perry to court tea party voters and other core Iowa activists, King told POLITICO: “It does to some degree. I don’t know how much. It’s hard to measure Rick Perry since he hasn’t been here.”

The Iowa Straw Poll? It’s Like Buttah!

From abc NEWS:

DES MOINES — Walking amid the good folk and food booths and rides at the Iowa State Fair, it’s hard to get a sense people are fixated on politics in the aftermath of the Republican debate and before the important straw vote in Ames.

Iowans seem more intent on viewing the giant carved butter cow in the Ag building or sampling the newest featured food at this fair – deep fried butter on a stick.

…snip…
In the debate, some candidates reappeared, some candidates disappeared and one new big player is about to appear. For the last few weeks, Newt Gingrich and Tim Pawlenty have basically gone off most folks’ radar screen – but that changed.  Each showed up in a much more forceful way. Pawlenty had a number of skirmishes and exchanges with the other candidates, especially Michelle Bachmann. And she definitely held her own.

Picture Perfect

From U.S. News & World Report:

Both the New Yorker and Newsweek featured profiles on Rep. Michele Bachmann recently.  As Robert Schlesinger points out on the Thomas Jefferson Street blog, the New Yorker profile connects Bachmann with some controversial views on American slavery (an issue that has caused problems for the Bachmann campaign before). The Newsweek profile isn’t exactly kind to the presidential candidate either. However, it is the cover of the magazine that is catching the most attention.

On it, the camera has captured Bachmann looking wide-eyed and surprised above the headline “Queen of Rage.”

I guess, Mr. DeMille, that Botox Batshit Bachmann wasn’t ready for her closeup.

She gets headaches? I thought she was just a carrier!

From Andrew Levy:

(CNN) — First of all: Michele Bachmann will not be getting my vote for president.

But that is a political decision, not a medical one. Reading media reports that she suffers from a severe migraine condition, I feel for her.

As one of over 30 million Americans who gets migraines regularly, I suspect I’m not alone in feeling empathy here. Bachmann has the same problem, politically speaking, that millions of other “migraineurs” experience with their co-workers, bosses, and friends. If you’ve never had a migraine, you tend to assume that the blinding headaches and neurological disruptions mean that the migraineur is either very brave, or very fragile.

The truth is neither of these.

Slaves to Stupidity

From THE IOWA INDEPENDENT:

Former New Mexico Gov. Gary Johnson issued a formal campaign statement regarding a 2012 social pledge unveiled by Bob Vander Plaats, labeling it as “offensive to the principles of liberty and freedom on which this country was founded.”

From Johnson’s statement:

Government should not be involved in the bedrooms of consenting adults. I have always been a strong advocate of liberty and freedom from unnecessary government intervention into our lives. The freedoms that our forefathers fought for in this country are sacred and must be preserved. The Republican Party cannot be sidetracked into discussing these morally judgmental issues — such a discussion is simply wrongheaded.

Gingr-itch, Starting from Scratch

From POLITICO:

Newt Gingrich has been trying to demonstrate an effort to rebuild his campaign, and one way was by getting his first finance co-chair in Iowa since the mass staff exodus of a few weeks ago.

Aides to Gingrich said he asked Greg Ganske, a former congressman who served in the House during Gingrich’s tenure as Speaker, to serve in the position during a tea party event in Indianola.

Ganske has been out of Congress for several years, but Gingrich has made clear he plans to try to make a renewed effort in the Hawkeye State, spending a string of days there this month and next in the lead-up to the Ames Straw Poll.
