Well, he *does* appear to have a lot of baggage…

From POLITICAL HOTSHEET at CBS NEWS:

You might not know [George Alan] Rekers, but he has long played a prominent role behind the scenes in the social conservative movement: A member of the founding board of the conservative Family Research Council, Rekers has authored books on how to ensure that children grow up straight.

A Baptist minister and former research fellow at Harvard University, Rekers has testified against gay adoptions and is on the board of National Association for Research & Therapy of Homosexuality, which is focused on helping gay people turn straight.

According to [a Miami] New Times story, by Penn Bullock and Brandon K. Thorp, Rekers was spotted returning from a ten-day trip to Europe with a young man identified as Lucien [the name he uses at the site is Geo], who he allegedly met on a gay website called Rentboy.com.

It’s that old argument–I’m not gay, but my boyfriend is!

He should have taken his focus off the family and put it on whom he was endorsing

From Hotline On Call at the National Journal:

Prominent social conservative leader James Dobson is switching horses in the race to replace retiring Sen. Jim Bunning (R-KY) after he misunderstood one candidate’s position on abortion.

Last week, Dobson endorsed KY Sec/State Trey Grayson (R), the establishment favorite to take over for Bunning. He did so because Dobson believed Grayson was better on abortion issues than ophthalmologist Rand Paul (R), who leads some recent polls.

In fact, Paul is pro-life himself. Dobson acknowledged the mistake and blamed GOP officials for spreading false information.

Dumb Blondes

From USA Today:

Donald Trump says Carrie Prejean’s photos are “fine” and her crown will stay put. “Carrie will remain Miss California.”

The Donald also said at this morning’s press conference: “We had a little bit of a dilemma with Carrie, who is here, lovely, and gave a very, very honest answer when asked a very tough question (about gay marriage) at the recent pageant. It’s the same answer the president of the U.S. gave, the same answer many people gave. It was probably a fair question because it’s asked of many people. If her beauty wasn’t so great, nobody really would have cared. But that’s not the way it worked out.”

Another Romance Down the Drain

From TIME:

These days, Republicans have the desperate aura of an endangered species. They lost Congress, then the White House; more recently, they lost a slam-dunk House election in a conservative New York district, then Senator Arlen Specter. Polls suggest that only one-fourth of the electorate considers itself Republican, that independents are trending Democratic and that as few as five states have solid Republican pluralities

…snip…

So are the Republicans going extinct?

…snip…

Samuel Wurzelbacher, better known as Joe the Plumber, tells TIME he’s so outraged by GOP overspending, he’s quitting the party β€” and he’s the bull’s-eye of its target audience.

The Christian Right Stuff

From CBN News:

Sarah Palin spoke with Focus on the Family Founder James Dobson today on the radio. There was a lot of love in the room flowing both ways.

…snip…

At one point she says the following:

β€œIt is that intercession that is so needed and so greatly appreciated and I can feel it too Dr. Dobson. I can feel the power of prayer and that strength that is provided through our prayer warriors across this nation and I so appreciate it.”

Next time, pray for some class!

From Top of the Ticket at the Los Angeles Times:

Political lesson of the day: Be careful what you ask people to pray for; you may find yourself embroiled in a public relations flap.

The political arm of the socially conservative Focus on the Family religious group today yanked from its website a video that called on folks to ask God to open the heavens and let precipitation pour on Barack Obama just before his nomination acceptance speech at the Democratic National Convention on Aug. 28.

Stuart Shepard, director of digital media at Focus Action (and a meteorologist to boot), wrote and appeared in the video that he posted in late July.

PAC Rats

From Mother Jones:

At the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC), where a speech by Vice President Dick Cheney on Thursday was greeted with chants of “four more years,” John McCain was in enemy territory. Many of the right-wing activists who gathered for the annual event scornfully regard the Arizona senator as a false conservative, one who first opposed President Bush’s tax cuts and who has too often dared to team up with Democrats in Congress to promote legislation that drives conservatives crazy, including campaign finance and immigration reform.

Is this the start of McCain’s hundred years of war?

Oh kids! Things are getting ugly on the other side of the aisle!

(CNN) — GOP front-runner John McCain is cruising into Super Tuesday with a hefty lead in the polls, but he’s drawing a backlash from some top conservatives who say he is too liberal to carry the Republican nomination.

Sen. John McCain has come under attack from conservatives who say is he too liberal.

Radio hosts Rush Limbaugh, Laura Ingraham, Hugh Hewitt and Lars Larson are among the conservative voices speaking out against the Arizona senator.

The attacks have gotten so heated that former Republican presidential nominee Bob Dole Monday wrote Limbaugh defending McCain.
