Well?

From the Guardian Unlimited:

Without clear frontrunners in the US primaries, pressure is mounting on New York mayor Mike Bloomberg to make a decision on launching an independent bid for the presidency.

He has talked with potential running mates; he has criticised candidates on policy; he has been flattered and encouraged by cover stories in Time and Newsweek; and he has paid for polling in every state to gauge potential support.

But officially, at least, the self-made multi-billionaire is sticking to his coy position: denying interest in a possible White House bid while his political team continues to lay the groundwork and infrastructure for one.

Great Candidate or the Greatest Candidate?

From the Los Angeles Times:

Stephen Colbert’s bid to formally join the presidential race in South Carolina was rejected Thursday by the state’s Democratic Party leaders, who said that the late-night comedian’s candidacy would distract from the serious business of picking a presidential nominee.

Serious business? Have they seen the debates so far?

The executive council of the South Carolina Democratic Party voted 13-3 to keep Colbert off the January primary ballot, saying the Comedy Central star did not meet guidelines requiring a candidate to be viable and to campaign actively for the job.

Phony, Boloney, and Maloney

From Media Matters:

On the October 1 edition of Fox News’ The O’Reilly Factor, host Bill O’Reilly discussed conservative radio host Rush Limbaugh’s controversial remarks about “phony soldiers,” and claimed that “Media Matters is peddling that Mr. Limbaugh was denigrating soldiers who dissent from the Iraq War, but that doesn’t seem to be true.” As evidence, O’Reilly aired a clip of Limbaugh claiming that he “was talking about one soldier with that phony soldier comment. Jesse MacBeth.” But O’Reilly did not point out, as Media Matters for America has done, that during the September 26 broadcast of his nationally syndicated radio show, Limbaugh — in his original comments — actually referred to “phony soldiers,” plural. O’Reilly also ignored the fact that Limbaugh did not refer to Jesse MacBeth until one minute and 50 seconds after making his “phony soldiers” comment.

I Bet He Grinds Organs, Too!

Is it true that money buys happiness? Apparently, the Bancroft family thinks so. From the Guardian:

It was a sad week, perhaps, for the Bancroft family – that paternal clan of old-time warriors who fought valiantly to maintain the independent integrity of the Wall Street Journal. Or did they?

A less sympathetic observer might suggest that the Bancrofts spent three months indulging in navel-gazing dithering over Rupert Murdoch’s $5.6bn offer for their family media vehicle before indulging in a venal lunge for cash at the flimsiest hint of an extra incentive.

Whatever you think of the Dirty Digger’s politics, you’ve got to hand it to Murdoch – his handling of the Dow Jones battle has shown business brilliance and he has left the Bancrofts looking more dysfunctional than the House of Windsor.

Just for the Halibut

Chris Matthews, host of MSNBC’s Slimeball Spitball Hardball, gave right-wing harridan, Ann Coulter, the entire hour to spew her venomous hate speech. Here’s a short synopsis from Media Matters:

Summary: Chris Matthews asked pundit Ann Coulter, “How do you know that Bill Clinton is gay?” — referring to her comment the night before on CNBC’s The Big Idea that Clinton “show[s] some level of latent homosexuality.” Coulter responded, “I don’t know if he’s gay. But Al Gore — total fag.” In concluding the interview, Matthews said of Coulter, “We’d love to have her back.”

Dems, Interrupted

Did ya watch the Democratic “debate” on CNN? Did ya want to smack Wolf Blitzer in the mouth and tell him that it is rude to constantly interrupt people? Maybe we can call Jack Cafferty and ask him to explain to Wolfie…..
