I always thought they were seedy!

From the International Herald-Tribune:

Democrats scored some convincing victories in both houses of the U.S. Congress, picking up at least five Senate seats, ousting Republican incumbents in New Hampshire and North Carolina and capturing seats in Virginia, Colorado and New Mexico left vacant by Republican retirements.

…snip…

In North Carolina, the senatorial career of Elizabeth Dole, one of the most famous names in Republican politics, came to an end at the hands of Kay Hagan, a state lawmaker whose portrayal of Dole as a Washington insider suggested that she was out of touch with the people of her state.

John Sununu, a first-term Republican from New Hampshire, lost his Senate seat in a rematch with former Governor Jeanne Shaheen, who had relentlessly tied him to President George W. Bush.

Supporting the troops? Nah, supporting Captain Underpants

(RTTNews) – President George W. Bush signed into law a $162 billion bipartisan plan to finance war operations in Iraq and Afghanistan Monday, praising Congress for their work and bringing the total provided by lawmakers for the wars to $850 billion.

…snip…

Citing specific congressmen, Bush thanked Congressmen John Boehner (R-OH), Steny Hoyer (D-MD), and Dave Obey (D-WI).

He also thanked five Senators whom the President said, “worked hard for the GI Bill expansion,” one of the hallmarks of the funding. Bush offered special thinks to Senators Jim Webb (D-VA), John Warner (R-VA), Lindsey Graham (R-SC), Richard Burr (R-NC), and presumptive Republican nominee John McCain (R-AZ).

However, McCain had opposed the 21st century GI Bill of rights that was endorsed by Senators Barack Obama (D-IL) and Hillary Clinton (D-NY), instead offering his own version.

al-Mal-icky

From Philadephia Daily News:

BAGHDAD – Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki yesterday lashed out at U.S. and French politicians who have called on him to step down and accused U.S. forces of committing “big mistakes” in killing and detaining civilians in the hunt for insurgents.

It was the second outburst from the embattled leader in recent days as he has come under fire from an array of allies and adversaries who accuse him of failing to unite his cabinet and put key laws and programs in place.

He drew fresh criticism yesterday from two influential congressional Republicans.

Maliki trained his angriest words on a Democratic presidential candidate, Sen. Hillary Rodman Clinton of New York, and Sen. Carl Levin (D., Mich.).
