Is It Out in ‘Ape’rback Yet?

From The New York Times:

There’s a proud White House tradition of cashing in — er, signing lucrative book deals — on the way out the door. That includes not only Presidents but also first ladies, secretaries of state, speechwriters and so on, all the way down to the White House chefs. But the common wisdom in Manhattan publishing circles was that George W. Bush would have to cool his heels for a while before he penned his memoir. The thinking: Bush’s low approval ratings might render any presidential tell-all a toxic asset for his publisher.

But Thursday, Crown, an imprint of Random House, announced that the former President has signed on to write a book, to be published in fall 2010, tentatively titled Decision Points. According to the publishing house, “the book will not be a conventional memoir, but instead will focus exclusively on approximate a dozen of the most interesting and important decisions in the former President’s personal and political life” — including his decision to quit drinking, his reaction to 9/11, his response to Hurricane Katrina; and how he found faith.

Well, kids, you know me–I’m a giver. And I thought that Chimpy might want some help with the cover of his new book. I’ve come up with a couple of alternatives, with a choice of different names.

Volcanoes Aren’t the Only Things Erupting!

From the Anchorage Daily News:

In his official Republican response to President Barack Obama’s speech to the nation Tuesday, Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal said repeatedly that “Americans can do anything!”

With one exception, apparently. We don’t need to keep an eye on simmering volcanoes.

Jindal singled out “volcano monitoring” as an unnecessary frill that Democrats stuck in the recently adopted stimulus package.

“Their legislation is larded with wasteful spending,” Jindal said. “It includes … $140 million for something called ‘volcano monitoring.’ Instead of monitoring volcanoes, what Congress should be monitoring is the eruption of spending in Washington, D.C.”

Speeches and Scream

From The New York Times:

Gov. Bobby Jindal of Louisiana has been a rising star in the Republican Party, but his stock took a hit as he was roundly panned for his televised response to President Obama’s first speech to Congress on Tuesday night.

Conservative commentators were among the harshest critics, calling Mr. Jindal’s delivery animatronic, his prose “cheesy” and his message — that federal spending is not the answer to the nation’s economic problems — uninspired.

Well, not all conservative commentators! There’s one guy who can’t get enough of Bobby J!

Happy Birthday Barbie, Part 2: First Lady Edition

Continuing with our celebration of Barbie’s 50th birthday. Yesterday, we looked at someone who wants to make a big splash in Washington, D.C., so today I thought we would look at some Barbies who really did make a splash, whether good or muddy. I thought we would do this chronologically. Therefore, we begin with the Lady MacBeth wife of George H. W. Bush and Mrs. Iselin mother of the bad seed Chimpy George W. Bush. We all remember how gracious she was when Hurricane Katrina hit.

One Week to the End of an Error

WASHINGTON (AFP) — George W. Bush passionately denied his turbulent presidency had damaged America’s moral standing in the world, in a defiant defense of his record in a farewell White House news conference.

The unpopular Republican president next week bequeaths Democrat Barack Obama a nation locked in two foreign wars, traumatized by the worst economic slump since the 1930s and with the budget deficit heading towards a trillion dollars.

Goodbye, Gerber-ding-dong, science calling!

From The Atlanta Journal-Constitution:

The controversial tenure of CDC Director Julie Gerberding will end Jan. 20 —- after Barack Obama is sworn in as president, employees of the Atlanta-based agency were informed in an e-mail sent late Friday evening.

Buh-bye, Julie, welcome back, science!

A Bigger Slice of the Eskimo Pie

From Reason:

A few years ago, in the wake of Hurricane Katrina, Sen. Tom Coburn of Oklahoma suggested taking money earmarked for a notoriously extravagant “bridge to nowhere” in Alaska and using it for reconstruction in Louisiana. Sen. Ted Stevens of Alaska, a fellow Republican, angrily declared, “This is the first time I have seen any attempt by any senator to treat my state…differently from any other state.”

In a tirade that included threats to behave like “a wounded bull on the floor of the Senate,” to “be taken out of here on a stretcher,” and to “resign from this body,” Stevens’ insistence that all he wanted was equal treatment for Alaska may have been the least believable thing he said. During the last four decades, no one has done more than Stevens to ensure that Alaska is treated unequally, receiving far more in federal spending than it pays in taxes.

Dan and Ted’s Excellent Delusion

From Politico:

ANCHORAGE—In an unusual move, one of the Senate’s most senior Democrats is lending his name to the embattled reelection bid of its longest-serving Republican.

Hawaii’s Daniel K. Inouye, a Democrat, in a statement issued by the campaign of Alaska’s Ted Stevens, a Republican and longtime friend, answers criticism from Stevens’ Democratic opponent and predicts Stevens will win reelection Tuesday and later be exonerated on an appeal of last week’s verdict finding him guilty of hiding gifts.
