Demagangery

From The Fix at The Washington Post:

Evan Bayh’s announcement […] that he and 14 other Democratic senators had begun to meet weekly to discuss ways in which the moderate/centrist wing of the party could ensure its voice is better heard by the White House and Senate leadership is the latest example of the Indiana Democrat’s increased willingness to critique — and tweak — the Obama administration.

The *Untied* States of America, Part 2….Eh?

Hey comrades amigos kids! Yesterday, we explored The Republic of Texas and the new Russian Alaska circa 2010, as predicted by Igor Panarin. If you will remember, the deteriorating economy, immigration, and a lack of morality are going to swirl together and turn into a new American civil war. While we are at each others’ throats, foreign powers will swoop in and take over.

Today, I thought we would examine the new Central North American Republic (let’s call it CNAR), which will be part of Canada or under Canadian influence.

CNAR

Just as in The Republic of Texas and the new Russian Alaska, politicians in the CNAR will try to adjust to the new reality. Let’s begin with Senators Sam Brownback and Pat Roberts. Hey, guys! Looks like you’re not in Kansas anymore! Eh?

Buh-bye 4th Amendment ~sniff~ I’ll Miss You!

From The New York Times:

WASHINGTON — The House on Friday overwhelmingly approved a bill overhauling the rules on the government’s wiretapping powers and conferring what amounts to legal immunity to the telephone companies that took part in President Bush’s program of eavesdropping without warrants after the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001.

Reversal on Fortune

From The New York Times:

The Democratic National Committee is planning to file suit against the Federal Election Commission Monday in an effort to compel it to investigate Senator John McCain’s withdrawal from the public financing system for the primary.

The lawsuit, which is to be filed in United States District Court in Washington, is largely a procedural move, unlikely to change anything in the dispute in the immediate future. The D.N.C. filed a complaint with the commission in February, challenging Mr. McCain’s right to pull out of public financing.

No wonder he’s smiling. Why follow the law if you know you can get away with breaking it?

How should I know if something’s illegal? I’m just the Attorney General!

From The New York Times:

WASHINGTON — Attorney General Michael B. Mukasey said Wednesday that while he would consider it torture if he underwent the harsh Central Intelligence Agency interrogation technique known as waterboarding, the practice was not necessarily illegal, and he would not rule out its use in the future.

…snip…

“Would waterboarding be torture if it were done to you?” asked Senator Edward M. Kennedy, Democrat of Massachusetts, glowering at Mr. Mukasey.

“I would feel that it was,” Mr. Mukasey acknowledged in the low monotone that he uses in virtually all public settings.

But the attorney general, a retired federal judge, would not be drawn into a larger conversation with Senator Kennedy or other Democrats over whether waterboarding might amount to torture if it was carried out on others, including American citizens held abroad.

Between Iraq and a Hard Place

From The New York Times:

WASHINGTON, July 7 — Democratic voters are not the only ones bitter over their party’s failure to use new Congressional power to force a withdrawal of troops from Iraq. Senator Harry Reid, the occasionally obstreperous Democratic leader, is upset as well.
“We haven’t done enough,” said Mr. Reid, a onetime moderate who has evolved into one of the party’s most fervent critics of the war.
