Personal Fouls-Sports Night at the Raisin!

From Business Week (January 30):

So much for bipartisanship…10 days into the President’s term and it’s over. Only the tiniest signs of inter-party mixing and mingling exist.

We’re not talking the stimulus bill here. We’re talking serious stuff: the President’s Super Bowl party.

After two days of questioning, the press office just released a list of the elected officials who will be watching the big game with Obama in the White House. The final score? Donkeys: 11. Elephants: 3. Seven of the guests hail from either Arizona or Pennsylvania, though apparently neither presidential rival John McCain or John Kyl, Arizona’s two Republican Senators, will be there. Pennsylvania will be better represented: both Democrat Bob Casey and Republican Arlen Specter will be in the house.

Jonesin’ For Glory

From The Los Angeles Times:

With the image last week of Jones standing weeping on the courthouse steps still fresh, it might be difficult to recall a time when she was all but inescapable as the symbol of the possibilities, and the joy, that could flow from a life devoted to sport.

Basketball Oops

(As promised, this is a bonus diary to try to make up for the time I was unable to connect to the internets. Let’s take a moment and talk about something other than politics (and if you just got here, look for the diary posted today if you like politics more.)
From ABC News:

African-Americans Tuesday criticized New York Knicks coach Isiah Thomas for saying it was less offensive for black men than for white men to call black women “bitches.”

Phillies Creamed!! Geez!!

The Philadelphia Phillies made history by losing its 10.000th game Sunday night. Now, I haven’t followed baseball for a while, but, if I remember correctly, 10,000 losses is not a good thing.
The St. Louis Cardinals handed the Phillies the loss (which might be a good thing, because I hear that this past week was not a very good one for cardinals!).

The franchise began in 1883 as the Philadelphia Quakers. All of the players left to make oatmeal, and the team changed the name to the Phillies in 1890.

They became the Blue Jays in 1943, but all of those guys must have moved to Toronto, so they changed the name back to the Phillies in 1945. (note: All of these facts may not be accurate, because I made them up except for the dates and the names.)

Give me your tired, your poor. Your huddled multimillionaire soccer players yearning to breathe free…

Originally from the Miami Herald:

International soccer star David Beckham and wife Victoria, formerly Posh Spice of the Spice Girls, don’t wait months or years to enter the United States legally.

Beckham’s status, bankroll and his attorney see to that. He receives approval for his visa within two weeks. Accommodating U.S. State Department officials grant him after-hours appointments and have asked him to pose for photos.
