I Hate Yoo!

From TALKING POINTS MEMO:

John Yoo says President Obama is too afraid of the politics of Guantanamo Bay to capture and interrogate terrorists.

The former George W. Bush administration lawyer, Yoo wrote the infamous torture memos used to justify the “enhanced interrogation techniques” that were a central legacy of Bush’s Global War On Terror. He now says that the killing of Osama bin Laden will go down in history as one of President Obama’s biggest national security fails.

With Justice For None

From CROOKS & LIARS:

From the moment he entered the White House, President Obama’s attitude towards the crime, corruption and politicization of the Bush Justice Department has been to “look forward and not backwards.” As we’ve seen for the third time in just the last several days, that’s working out just fine for the Bush lawyers.

On Wednesday, prosecutor Nora Dannehy [assigned by Gonzales’ successor Michael Mukasey]  announced she would bring no charges against Alberto Gonzales, Karl Rove, Harriet Miers, Monica Goodling or any of the key players behind the purge of 9 U.S. attorneys.

With All Doo-doo Respect

From Paul Slansky at THE HUFFINGTON POST:

Lost in the coverage of President Obama’s too-gentle smackdown of John McCain at the health care reform summit – I would have preferred to have heard something like, “You know, John, instead of whining about all of my broken promises, why don’t you take this opportunity to apologize to your fellow citizens for inflicting that morally-impaired harridan Sarah Palin on them?” – was something sublime that passed this bitter old hack’s lips while he was using his allotted time to remind viewers how consumed with resentment he still is about entering the history books as the first white man to lose a presidential election to a (half) black man.

Health care legislation, McCain bellyached, was drawn up not in full public view, as the president had pledged it would be, but was “produced behind closed doors,” in the kinds of back rooms that McCain himself had hidden out in decades earlier while working on behalf of his old buddy Charles Keating, architect of the nation’s biggest savings and loan collapse. Griped McCain about the health bill, “It was produced with unsavory – I say that with respect – deal-making.”

Keep On Truckin’ (But Don’t Break a Nail)

From U.S. News & WORLD REPORT:

Nothing’s changed for Scott Brown when he drives to work, even though it’s now in the shadow of the U.S. Capitol. The newly elected Massachusetts Republican senator still drives his 2005 green GMC Canyon pickup truck to the job.

Aides say that Brown has no plans to trade the truck in for a more senatorial ride. What’s more, when he travels around town to events, he shoves his aides into the cluttered back seat of the mid-size truck.

Wow! How macho can one fella be?

Condiland

Kids, so sorry, but I’m still feeling craptastic, so I went back to my American Street trough and dug out one of my old favorites. It was originally posted on April 23, 2008. I apologize if some of the links no longer work.

A great big MMMWWAAAHHHHHHHHHH to my dear Raisinettes who have been continuing to visit despite the lack of any new stuff. Hope to be back soon with some new posts and to reply to all of you comments. In the meantime, I hope you enjoy playing Condiland:

A Sweet Little Game for Sweet Little Folks

Hey kids! Are you sick of hearing about Pennsylvania yet? I know I am. I think we need to distract ourselves, and how better than with an old-fashioned board game? I bet the first game that most kids get is Candyland. Well, guess what! There’s a new version out, and I picked one up! Let me share it with you. Welcome to……

They mean what they say….until they take it back

From the raw story:

Either former Bush officials are being pressured to backtrack, or recent flip-flops are just more evidence that they had no convictions in the first place.

In a story entitled Gonzales backtracks on support for CIA probe, The Washington Times‘ Ben Conery reports, “Former Attorney General Alberto R. Gonzales said Thursday that his previous assertion that it was ‘legitimate to question and examine’ charges of CIA abuses of suspected terrorists did not mean he endorsed such an investigation.”

Uh-oh, Chimpy, now you’ve gone and made him mad!

From The Washington Post:

In his first few months after leaving office, former vice president Richard B. Cheney threw himself into public combat against the “far left” agenda of the new commander in chief. More private reflections, as his memoir takes shape in slashing longhand on legal pads, have opened a second front against Cheney’s White House partner of eight years, George W. Bush.

Cheney’s disappointment with the former president surfaced recently in one of the informal conversations he is holding to discuss the book with authors, diplomats, policy experts and past colleagues.

…snip…

“In the second term, he felt Bush was moving away from him,” said a participant in the recent gathering, describing Cheney’s reply. “He said Bush was shackled by the public reaction and the criticism he took. Bush was more malleable to that. The implication was that Bush had gone soft on him, or rather Bush had hardened against Cheney’s advice. […]”

It Had To Be Yoo

From Talking Points Memo:

The fact that John Yoo was the only Justice Department OLC [Office of Legal Counsel] official who was “read into” the surveillance program — even though he wasn’t the head of OLC at the time — has already been noted by others looking through the inspectors general report on the program released last week.

But one excerpt from the report is worth paying particular attention to, since it underlines the special role that Yoo came to play on the White House’s behalf.

Referring to Jay Bybee, who ran OLC at the time and therefore was Yoo’s supervisor, the report says:

Bybee described Yoo as “articulate and brilliant” and said he had a “golden resume” and was “very well connected” with officials in the White House. Bybee said that from these connections, in addition to Yoo’s scholarship in the area of executive authority during wartime, it was not surprising that Yoo “became the White House’s guy” on national security matters.
