An Uncivil Union

From FORTUNE:

Donald Trump and his running mate, Indiana Governor Mike Pence, don’t have much in common—politically, philosophically or personally. And their awkward marriage was on full display in the first interview the two gave together on Sunday on “60 Minutes.”

“It’s probably obvious to people we have different styles,” Pence, who served six terms in Congress, told Lesley Stahl.

Kids, Fortune is being waaaaayyyyy too polite. It was a disaster! Every time Plain Dry Melba Toast Pence opened his mouth, Hairy Cheez Doodle cut him off and answered for him. Lesley Stahl just giggled as the journalism deities wept. Anyway, I was lucky enough to nab a picture of the new couple warming up before they started taping.

Tears of a Bronzo the Clown

From Jonathan Capehart at POST PARTISAN at The Washington Post:

One of the perks of being in the Fourth Estate is that sometimes you get the transcripts of news shows before they air. So it was with great delight that I read the “60 Minutes” interview with Speaker-designate John Boehner (R-Ohio). It read well, especially the stuff on how “dark skin” Boehner was as easily prone to crying as the Pillsbury Doughboy was prone to giggling when poked in the stomach. But, man, when I watched the interview, I kept thinking, “Dude, c’mon!”

Tortured Logic

From CBS News:

The justice has been explaining his positions publicly more and more, and even delving into some thorny issues, like torture.

“I don’t like torture,” Scalia says. “Although defining it is going to be a nice trick. But who’s in favor of it? Nobody. And we have a law against torture. But if the – everything that is hateful and odious is not covered by some provision of the Constitution,” he says.

“If someone’s in custody, as in Abu Ghraib, and they are brutalized by a law enforcement person, if you listen to the expression ‘cruel and unusual punishment,’ doesn’t that apply?” Stahl asks.

“No, No,” Scalia replies.

Feith-based Initiative

(CBS) The name Douglas Feith may not mean much to most Americans, but to students of the Iraq War and historians already studying it, he is one of the main architects.

Slime and Punishment

From The Raw Story, November 26, 2007:

For most Americans, the very concept of political prisoners is remote and exotic, a practice that is associated with third-world dictatorships but is foreign to the American tradition. The idea that a prominent politician — a former state governor — could be tried on charges that many observers consider to be trumped-up, convicted in a trial that involved numerous questionable procedures, and then hauled off to prison in shackles immediately upon sentencing would be almost unbelievable.

But there is such a politician: Don Siegelman, Democratic governor of Alabama from 1999 to 2003. Starting just a few weeks after he took office, Siegelman was targeted by an investigation launched by his political opponents and escalated from the state to the federal level by Bush Administration appointees in 2001.
