Hats Afire

From npr:

Conservatives are livid after President Trump appeared to have made a deal with Democrats in order to save the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals, or DACA, program — claiming he is abandoning his base and the stringent immigration platform he campaigned on.

Commentator Ann Coulter went on a Twitter tirade Thursday, furious that the president appeared to be reneging on his trademark border wall. “Put a fork in Trump, he’s dead,” the outspoken author and once-fervent Trump ally wrote“At this point, who DOESN’T want Trump impeached?”

El Pandering

From POLITICO:

Newt Gingrich has come a long way since criticizing Latinos a few years ago for continuing to speak “the language of living in a ghetto.” He’s taking Spanish lessons, reaching out to Hispanic community leaders, and supports “finding a way for residency” for some illegal immigrants.

He recently attended a Texas conference on strengthening Latino and Jewish dialogue, and regularly publishes op-eds in Spanish.

Pander much?

King Gets a Royal Slapdown

From POLITICS DAILY:

Rep. Steve King of Iowa fully expected to become chairman of the House Judiciary subcommittee on immigration — and his party’s leading voice on immigration — when Republicans took over the House this month. He talked as if it were a done deal, and it was reported that way by many outlets.

But King learned last week it was not to be. Instead, even though he was the senior member of the panel, GOP leaders tapped veteran Rep. Elton Gallegly of California.

Why did they snub King, a quotable cable regular, as their chief immigration spokesman? Just guessing, but . . .
