Volcanoes Aren’t the Only Things Erupting!

From the Anchorage Daily News:

In his official Republican response to President Barack Obama’s speech to the nation Tuesday, Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal said repeatedly that “Americans can do anything!”

With one exception, apparently. We don’t need to keep an eye on simmering volcanoes.

Jindal singled out “volcano monitoring” as an unnecessary frill that Democrats stuck in the recently adopted stimulus package.

“Their legislation is larded with wasteful spending,” Jindal said. “It includes … $140 million for something called ‘volcano monitoring.’ Instead of monitoring volcanoes, what Congress should be monitoring is the eruption of spending in Washington, D.C.”

Dan and Ted’s Excellent Delusion

From Politico:

ANCHORAGE—In an unusual move, one of the Senate’s most senior Democrats is lending his name to the embattled reelection bid of its longest-serving Republican.

Hawaii’s Daniel K. Inouye, a Democrat, in a statement issued by the campaign of Alaska’s Ted Stevens, a Republican and longtime friend, answers criticism from Stevens’ Democratic opponent and predicts Stevens will win reelection Tuesday and later be exonerated on an appeal of last week’s verdict finding him guilty of hiding gifts.

The Politics of Fear and Loathing

From Freep:

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. — Christian broadcaster Pat Robertson is urging prayer before Election Day to stave off an imminent Mideast war he said could bring nuclear attacks on the United States.

In a letter on his Web site, http://www.patrobertson.com, Robertson said his opinion was that Israel would bomb Iranian nuclear sites between Nov. 4 and the inauguration of the United States’ new president.

Robertson tied his warning to biblical prophecy.

Foreign Affairs are Foreign to Princess Sarah

From The New York Times:

Her first interview, with the ABC News anchor Charles Gibson, was too hard. The second, with Sean Hannity on the Fox News Channel, was too soft. The third, however, did not turn out to be just right for Gov. Sarah Palin of Alaska.

On the “CBS Evening News” on Thursday, Katie Couric asked Ms. Palin, Senator John McCain’s running mate, what she meant when she cited Alaska’s proximity to Russia as foreign affairs experience.

…snip…

“That Alaska has a very narrow maritime border between a foreign country, Russia, and on our other side, the land — boundary that we have with — Canada,” she replied.

…snip…

Ms. Couric pressed her again to explain the geographic point. “Well, it certainly does,” Ms. Palin said, “because our, our next-door neighbors are foreign countries, they’re in the state that I am the executive of.”

Other People’s Chutzpah Would Palin Comparison

From The New York Times:

ANCHORAGE — Alaska lawmakers voted Friday to issue a subpoena to Todd Palin, the husband of Gov. Sarah Palin, in an escalation of the inquiry into whether Ms. Palin improperly tried to have her former brother-in-law dismissed from his job as a state trooper.
