Anchors: A Weigh-in

From The New York Times:

There were no high-tech frills or showy experiments in Diane Sawyer’s brisk first night as anchor of “World News” on ABC. Instead, on Monday, the network draped its star in utter seriousness: Ms. Sawyer gamely sparred with President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad of Iran about his country’s nuclear intentions and whether his government oppresses street protesters in Tehran.

The Book to Nowhere: Thanks, but No Thanks

From POLITICS DAILY:

Republican Sen. John McCain, who lifted former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin out of obscurity to be his vice presidential partner last year, isn’t saying much about Palin’s new tell-all, blame-all book. But Steve Schmidt, who managed the campaign and is a chief target in the book, doesn’t think much of “Going Rogue.”

The Party of Personal Responsibility…except when it comes to accepting responsibility

From Greg Mitchell at Editor & Publisher:

NEW YORK (Commentary) In the months after the November election, and then gaining even more attention as Barack Obama became president, are charges that the media helped elect him by attacking, of mocking, Sarah Palin. Numerous pundits and conservative activists have alleged that she had given John McCain a big boost in the polls when first named and that she would have help drive him to victory if not for the later treatment by Katie and Tina and Charlie Gibson and all the rest.

But this is not true.

Whiny and Cheesy Party

From Jezebel:

Call the wahmbulence! In a new interview with noted douchebag John Ziegler, Sarah Palin whines about, among other things, Katie Couric […], Keith Olbermann and Tina Fey.

Conservative Estimates

George Will (Washington Post):

Under the pressure of the financial crisis, one presidential candidate is behaving like a flustered rookie playing in a league too high. It is not Barack Obama.

…snip…

It is arguable that, because of his inexperience, Obama is not ready for the presidency. It is arguable that McCain, because of his boiling moralism and bottomless reservoir of certitudes, is not suited to the presidency. Unreadiness can be corrected, although perhaps at great cost, by experience. Can a dismaying temperament be fixed?

Foreign Affairs are Foreign to Princess Sarah

From The New York Times:

Her first interview, with the ABC News anchor Charles Gibson, was too hard. The second, with Sean Hannity on the Fox News Channel, was too soft. The third, however, did not turn out to be just right for Gov. Sarah Palin of Alaska.

On the “CBS Evening News” on Thursday, Katie Couric asked Ms. Palin, Senator John McCain’s running mate, what she meant when she cited Alaska’s proximity to Russia as foreign affairs experience.

…snip…

“That Alaska has a very narrow maritime border between a foreign country, Russia, and on our other side, the land — boundary that we have with — Canada,” she replied.

…snip…

Ms. Couric pressed her again to explain the geographic point. “Well, it certainly does,” Ms. Palin said, “because our, our next-door neighbors are foreign countries, they’re in the state that I am the executive of.”
