Happy Birthday, Barbie: 4th and Final(?) Edition

Well, kids, in parts 1, 2, and 3, we’ve covered wannabes and motherhood, a few first ladies, and Rethuglican women in the Senate. Since we’ve paid homage to those in the Senate, I would be remiss to ignore the Ladies of the House. Let’s start with my fave, Michele Bachmann. From The Minnesota Independent:

U.S. Rep. Michele Bachmann’s ranting has the blog world buzzing yet again this week. Late last week, in an appearance with KTLK’s Chris Baker, the Minnesota Republican said, “We’re running out of rich people in this country.” She said she thinks Obama will lower the “rich” threshold to couples making $65,000 a year.

Oh, Michele, you are indeed a Barbie doll!

I always thought they were seedy!

From the International Herald-Tribune:

Democrats scored some convincing victories in both houses of the U.S. Congress, picking up at least five Senate seats, ousting Republican incumbents in New Hampshire and North Carolina and capturing seats in Virginia, Colorado and New Mexico left vacant by Republican retirements.

…snip…

In North Carolina, the senatorial career of Elizabeth Dole, one of the most famous names in Republican politics, came to an end at the hands of Kay Hagan, a state lawmaker whose portrayal of Dole as a Washington insider suggested that she was out of touch with the people of her state.

John Sununu, a first-term Republican from New Hampshire, lost his Senate seat in a rematch with former Governor Jeanne Shaheen, who had relentlessly tied him to President George W. Bush.

Dis-Honored Program

From Law . com:

A former candidate for the Justice Department’s honors program is suing for $100,000 in damages, alleging Justice officials violated his rights and those of others when they brought political bias into vetting honors-program applications.

The class action by Sean Gerlich — filed Monday in U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia — is the first suit resulting from an internal Justice report issued last week that says two former Justice officials illegally screened applicants to the honors and summer intern programs.

The two officials were Esther Slater McDonald, then counsel to the associate attorney general and now an associate at Seyfarth Shaw, and Michael Elston, then chief of staff to Deputy Attorney General Paul McNulty and now a partner at McGuireWoods.

Being Stinkin’ Rich Can Be So Taxing

April 18 (Bloomberg) — John McCain, who has clinched the Republican presidential nomination, reported $405,409 in income last year and paid $118,660 in federal taxes, according to tax returns made public today. He gave $105,467 to charity, the records show.

His campaign didn’t release tax returns for his wife, Cindy, who is chairman of the Phoenix-based Hensley & Co., one of the largest beer distributors in the U.S.

Moral Twerpitude

WASHINGTON (CNN) — I. Lewis “Scooter” Libby was disbarred from practicing law in the nation’s capital on Thursday.

The former chief of staff to Vice President Dick Cheney was convicted last year of lying to a grand jury and federal agents probing the leak of the identity of a CIA operative, Valerie Plame Wilson.

“When a member of the Bar is convicted of an offense involving moral turpitude, disbarment is mandatory,” the District of Columbia Court of Appeals wrote in its opinion, which is posted on its Web site.

It’s All Geek to Me!

From ChannelWeb Network:

A top Bush administration official in charge of probing Karl Rove’s White House political activities is alleged to have improperly deleted all of the data on his office PC by means of a “seven-level wipe” conducted by a 1-800-905-GEEK technician.

Scott Bloch heads the Office of Special Counsel, which is investigating possible Hatch Act violations by Karl Rove when the ex-deputy White House chief of staff served in the Bush administration. Bloch himself is under investigation for various alleged improprieties by the federal Office of Personnel Management, whose investigators say Bloch “erased all the files on his office personal computer late last year,” according to a Wall Street Journal report published Tuesday.
