Mississippi Gov. Haley Barbour, who may seek the Republican nomination for president, is trying to sell the biggest load of revisionist nonsense about race, politics and the South that I’ve ever heard. Ever.

He has the gall to try to portray Southern Republicans as having been enlightened supporters of the civil rights movement all along. I can’t decide whether this exercise in rewriting history should be described as cynical or sinister. Whichever it is, the record has to be set straight.

Hey, Haley, the Barbour of Incivility, if you’re going to make up fairy tales, you should dress the part…

It’s not the heat, it’s the stupidity

From CNN:

Fresh on the heels of a new immigration law that has led to calls to boycott her state, Arizona’s governor has signed a bill banning ethnic studies classes that “promote resentment” of other racial groups.

Gov. Jan Brewer approved the measure without public statement Tuesday, according to state legislative records. The new law forbids elementary or secondary schools to teach classes that are “designed primarily for pupils of a particular ethnic group” and advocate “the overthrow of the United States government” or “resentment toward a race or class of people.”

Hmmmm, I wonder what she thinks about Confederate History Month.

Virginia Attorney General Involved in Coverup!

The “Great Seal” of the Commonwealth of Virginia depicts the Roman goddess Virtus standing over the defeated Tyranny and has been in use since 1776. Virtus is holding a spear and a sheathed sword, and the garb she is wearing exposes her left breast. (An earlier rendition of the seal traced back to Thomas Jefferson shows the goddess wearing even less clothing.) However, far-right Virginia Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli (R) is now tinkering with the historic seal:

The seal depicts the Roman goddess Virtus, or virtue, wearing a blue tunic draped over one shoulder, her left breast exposed. But on the new lapel pins Cuccinelli recently handed out to his staff, Virtus’ bosom is covered by an armored breastplate.

Why stop there? Replace the boob with a boob you probably like, Ken. John Ashcroft will feel very at home all covered up. And don’t stop there. Sic semper tyrannis (Thus always to tyrants)? Seriously? That’s way too wussy. I suggest Stamus contra malum: We fight against the evil. C’mon you teabaggers love talkin’ about fightin’ evil! And who better to personify the victim of John Ashcroft’s asswhuppin’ than Dr. Evil himself?

The Barbour of Incivility

From the Memphis Commercial Appeal:

JACKSON, Miss. — Mississippi Gov. Haley Barbour is drawing criticism for proclaiming April as Confederate Heritage Month without mentioning slavery, the second governor this month to come under fire for the omission.

Rep. Robert Johnson, D-Natchez, who is black, said Monday that people need to learn about the “abhorrent, violent, depraved actions of slavery.”

Bob McDonnell, Virginia’s Republican governor, also named April as Confederate History Month, but his original proclamation didn’t mention slavery. After coming under national criticism, McDonnell last week revised it to denounce slavery as “evil and inhumane.”

Barbour, a Republican who helped campaign for McDonnell last year, said Sunday on CNN that slavery was bad but a fuss over McDonnell’s original proclamation “doesn’t amount to diddly.”
