Welcome to the United States of Corporate America

From Howard Fineman at Newsweek:

I rarely attend a Supreme Court argument, but I did last fall for a “rehearing” of the campaign-spending case. […] The most vivid image I saw was the red-faced Chief Justice John Roberts, veins popping on his neck as he vibrated with disgust at the idea that government could limit what a corporate entity could do or say in the political arena.

The 5–4 opinion issued Thursday by the Roberts Court—written by swing voter Anthony Kennedy—was even more sweeping than I had imagined and predicted.

In light of the new ruling, the Senate has already started redecorating.

Stupak, Stupid, It’s the Pitts!

From Salon:

American women will pay the price for the Democratic dithering that allowed Saturday’s passage of the Stupak-Pitts amendment, a worm virus inserted into the House healthcare reform bill with surgical precision. But the Democratic Party will suffer collateral damage.

Stupak-Pitts isn’t just “the biggest restriction on women’s right to choose in our generation,” as Rep. Diana DeGette of Colorado puts it; it’s also evidence that on abortion the Democratic Party is now captive, just like the GOP, to Christian conservatism. Of course, Republicans traded away their party’s moderate wing for real electoral gains, a base that propelled them to power for decades. The Democrats, already in power, sucker-punched themselves, and all they have to show for it is a big fat shiner in the shape of Bart Stupak’s knuckles.

The Captain Underpants Campaign Gets Dicked

From The Guardian:

Barack Obama’s team moved quickly to exploit what it viewed as a late and unexpected campaign gift – the endorsement of John McCain in a rare public appearance by the vice-president, Dick Cheney.

In contrast with President George Bush’s absence from the campaign trail at the weekend, Cheney flew to his home state, Wyoming, to speak at a rally in support of the Republican ticket.

“John is a man who understands the danger facing America,” Cheney told a rally in Laramie on Saturday. “He’s a man who has looked into the face of evil and not flinched, he’s a man who is comfortable with responsibility, and has been since he joined the armed forces at the age of 17. He has earned our support and confidence, and the time is now to make him commander in chief.”

Who Needs Enemies?

From The New York Times:

Offering a preview of the general election campaign, President Bush sought on Friday to unify the Republican Party behind its presumptive nominee and said the contest would present the country with a stark ideological choice at a time of war.

Mr. Bush did not mention Senator John McCain in an early-morning speech to the Conservative Political Action Conference here. But he said that “soon we will have a nominee who will carry the conservative banner into this election and beyond,” in what was widely interpreted as a message of reassurance about Mr. McCain, whose relationship with Mr. Bush has been strained in the past, and who faces misgivings from the Republican right.

PAC Rats

From Mother Jones:

At the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC), where a speech by Vice President Dick Cheney on Thursday was greeted with chants of “four more years,” John McCain was in enemy territory. Many of the right-wing activists who gathered for the annual event scornfully regard the Arizona senator as a false conservative, one who first opposed President Bush’s tax cuts and who has too often dared to team up with Democrats in Congress to promote legislation that drives conservatives crazy, including campaign finance and immigration reform.
