Creeps of Faith

From MinnPost.com:

WASHINGTON — Near the end of his speech before the Faith and Freedom Coalition conference Friday night, former Minnesota Governor Tim Pawlenty began to recite 2 Chronicles 7:14, the verse he said Ronald Reagan laid his hand on while taking the presidential oath of office.

Oy, it’s always What Would Ronald Reagan Do, isn’t it?

Take 2 Tablets, but Don’t Call Me in the Morning

(Reuters) – A former Alabama judge who gained attention for defying orders to take down a “Ten Commandments” monument from his courthouse said on Monday he was seriously considering running for president.

Roy Moore, a Republican who was removed from Alabama’s Supreme Court by a judicial ethics panel, said he was ready to join the 2012 race.

Because there aren’t enough clowns in the Rethuglican mix now.  By the way, Ol’ Roy may be a religious fanatic, but his campaign posters are rather unorthodox…

Kenny Dodgers

Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you’ve undoubtedly heard that Chimpy’s 2004 campaign manager and former Republican National Committee chairman, Ken Mehlman, finally admitted what everyone already knew–he’s gay. The media was all abuzz. Here are some of what the luminaries at Fox News had to say:

Gretchen Carlson, Steve Doocy, and Brian I’m-the-one-who’s-not-Doocy Kilmeade:

“xxxxxxxxxxxxx”

Sean Hannity:

“xxxxxxxxxxxxx”

Bill O’Reilly:

“xxxxxxxxxxxxx”

Glenn Beck:

“xxxxxxxxxxxxx”

From The Wonk Room at THINK PROGRESS:

When Judge Vaughn Walker struck down Proposition 8, Fox News barely mentioned the story and its most prominent conservative commentators ignored it entirely.  Yesterday, after the Atlantic’s Marc Ambinder reported that former RNC Chairman Ken Mehlman — who had orchestrated President Bush’s gay-bating 2004 re-election campaign — was coming out as gay, Fox News Channel remained similarly mum and as of this posting has yet to run a single segment on the story.

The Wedding Panners

From POLITICO:

Republicans in California are remaining largely silent on last week’s ruling overturning Proposition 8. But a band of conservative House members didn’t waste a minute in their day back in Washington, highlighting their opposition to gay marriage.

Reps. Lamar Smith of Texas, Michele Bachmann of Minnesota, Steve King of Iowa and John Fleming of Louisiana told reporters on Tuesday that the California federal judge who overturned Prop. 8 acted against the will of voters in striking down the state’s ban on gay marriage.

Horsefeathers!

From James Wolcott at VANITY FAIR:

Look, I have no idea why Senate candidate J. D. Hayworth would want to marry a horse […]. Perhaps he fell under the spell of a lustrous filly while vacationing at a dude ranch, which I gather are plentiful in his home state of Arizona, or struck up a conversation with Mr. Ed in a bar catering to lonely men whose wives are deep into denial, a casual chat over a bowl of peanuts that led to a spirited “hayride,” if you catch my innuendo.

Goodbye 2009!

To the tune of My Favorite Things (music by Richard Rodgers, lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein II):

Birthers and Deathers, and all kinds of crazy,
A Twitterer quits, ’cause she’s just too damned lazy,
Rescuing banks ’cause they’re too big to fail,
Tales about the Appalachian trail.

I Now Unpronounce You…..

From the Star Telegram:

Texans: Are you really married?

Maybe not.

Barbara Ann Radnofsky, a Houston lawyer and Democratic candidate for attorney general, says that a 22-word clause in a 2005 constitutional amendment designed to ban gay marriages erroneously endangers the legal status of all marriages in the state.

The amendment, approved by the Texas Legislature and overwhelmingly ratified by Texas voters, declares that “marriage in this state shall consist only of the union of one man and one woman.” But the trouble-making phrase, as Radnofsky sees it, is Subsection B, which declares:

“This state or a political subdivision of this state may not create or recognize any legal status identical or similar to marriage.”

Architects of the amendment included the clause to ban same-sex civil unions and domestic partnerships.

But Radnofsky, who was a member of the powerhouse Vinson & Elkins law firm in Houston for 27 years until retiring in 2006, says the wording of Subsection B effectively “eliminates marriage in Texas,” including common-law marriages.

I can think of one person who’s thrilled to death over the news!
