Mittsie: “My Alma Doesn’t Mater”

From The Boston Globe:

It always provokes a laugh among conservative audiences but is no less curious each time it happens, those attacks Mitt Romney makes on his own alma mater.

He did so again yesterday, when the Republican presidential contender criticized Harvard University during a foreign policy speech to the Veterans of Foreign Wars national convention in San Antonio, Texas.

Chastising those who may believe that if the United States recedes, so, too, will its enemies, Romney bashed what is often seen as a liberal bastion.

“That may be what they think in that Harvard faculty lounge, but it’s not what they know on the battlefield!” he told the vets.

Not only is Harvard a major player in Massachusetts, the state Romney led for four years as governor, but it also is the school from which he received the business and law degrees that helped propel him toward his highly lucrative venture capital career.

Kans-asses

From THE TOPEKA CAPITAL-JOURNAL:

The Kansas Democratic Party injected the Kansas gubernatorial campaign Monday with questions about the relationship between Republican nominee Sam Brownback and a provocative evangelist who dreamed the Kansas senator would be elected president.

Kenny Johnston, executive director of the state Democratic Party, said conduct of preacher Lou Engle and the degree of the U.S. senator’s acceptance of the Christian activist’s theological ideas about homosexuality and abortion were legitimate issues to consider as Kansas voters approach the Nov. 2 election. Brownback is on the ballot with Democratic state Sen. Tom Holland and the Reform and Libertarian party nominees.

Summers’ Time and the Leaving is Easy

From The Washington Post:

President Obama‘s top economic adviser, Lawrence H. Summers, will step down as director of the National Economic Council after the November elections and return to a teaching post at Harvard University, the White House announced Tuesday.

The departure of Summers, 55, will complete the turnover of three of Obama’s four top economic advisers as the administration struggles with the political fallout of a stubbornly weak economy.

If he gets his butt kicked, will he feel it through the diaper?

From Talking Points Memo:

There are no shortage of conservatives in Louisiana who’d like to retire David Vitter. But late this afternoon, one prominent Republican decided to make a go of it, entering the race at the last possible moment to take on the scandal-plagued senator in the GOP primary this August.

Meet Chet Traylor, a former Louisiana Supreme Court Justice well-connected in Louisiana Republican political and business circles circles, who surprised everyone this afternoon by qualifying at the witching hour to challenge Vitter.

Vitter has plenty of money in the bank and, with just weeks to go, time on his side. But Traylor could catch up quickly.

Poor Little Diaper Davy! That’s enough to make someone poopie in his pants!

Glenn Beck University, Where Every Degree Is A BS Degree!

From POLITICAL HOTSHEET at CBS NEWS:

Conservative Fox News television host, author, and radio host Glenn Beck has started a university.

Sort of.

According to an announcement on Beck’s Web site, “Beck University is a unique academic experience bringing together experts in the fields of religion, American history and economics.” In July, August and September, interested parties can participate in “captivating lectures and interactive online discussions” in which “experts will explore the concepts of Faith, Hope and Charity and show you how they influence America’s past, her present and most importantly her future.”

The less bein’ said about it, the better

From MEDIA MATTERS (May 12, 2010):

Joe Scarborough and MSNBC’s Morning Joe cast devoted nearly half an hour today to discussing discredited rumors that Elena Kagan is gay — even while noting that the White House says she isn’t gay and repeatedly acknowledging that most Americans probably don’t “care.”

…snip…

The discussion occupied much of the first 15 minutes of the show. Despite the fact that there is absolutely no evidence that Kagan is gay and that the White House and Kagan’s friends have unequivocally said that she isn’t gay, Scarborough portrayed the issue as a “bigger question.” Scarborough and Pat Buchanan repeatedly tied the discredited rumors to false claims that Kagan banned military recruiters from Harvard’s campus.

The purported hook for Scarborough’s discussion was the controversy over whether The Wall Street Journal‘s use of a 17-year-old photo of Kagan playing softball was intended to be a reference to the rumors.

Leading off the show, Scarborough said, “Apparently, I didn’t know this, but softball bat symbolizes a certain lifestyle.”

You know, I don’t remember this much scrutiny about  Senator Susan Collins, Harriet Miers, or Condoleezza Rice.  They’re older than Elena Kagan and unmarried.  How do we know that they’re not in…

Let the Games Begin!

Washington (CNN) — President Obama took a key step in cementing his judicial legacy Monday, nominating Solicitor General Elena Kagan to replace retiring Justice John Paul Stevens on the Supreme Court.

If confirmed, the 50-year-old Kagan will become the 112th Supreme Court justice. She would be the third woman on the nine-member bench and the fourth in the history of the court.

…snip…

She served as a law clerk for federal judge Abner Mikva and then for Justice Thurgood Marshall on the high court. Marshall affectionately called the diminutive Kagan “Shorty.”

Re-order in the Court?

From 44 at The Washington Post:

President Obama’s nomination of Solicitor General Elena Kagan to replace retiring Supreme Court Justice John Paul Stevens was met with criticism from the left and the right Monday as liberals continued to raise questions about her views on executive power and conservative bloggers honed in on her lack of experience as a judge.
