The Pledge of a Grievance

From CQ POLITICS:

STERLING, Va. — House Republicans on Thursday officially unveiled what they hope will be a majority-making agenda at a Virginia hardware store warehouse.

The agenda, “A Pledge to America,” calls for a series of reforms, including cutting the size of the federal government, to try to put the country back on a path to prosperity. The agenda, months in the making, only lightly touches on divisive social issues.

Rethugs ♥ Abstinence…for everyone else

From The Washington Post:

In what may amount to an election-year tit-for-tat, House Democratic leaders are privately weighing whether to seek an ethics investigation into how Republicans handled the sex scandal that ended Indiana Rep. Mark Souder’s career.

The idea arose Wednesday after Rep. Mike Pence (Ind.), chairman of the House Republican Conference, told reporters that he learned last week of his GOP colleague’s extramarital affair — three days before House Minority Leader John Boehner (Ohio) said he first heard about it. Pence said that he approached Souder on the House floor Thursday after hearing rumors of the romance.

Taking the Nasty Plunge

From THE HILL:

Rep. Andre Carson (D-Ind.) said Saturday that healthcare protesters at the Capitol directed racial epithets at him and Rep. John Lewis (D-Ga.) as they walked outside.

Carson, a member of the Congressional Black Caucus along with Lewis, told The Hill that protesters called the lawmakers the N-word.

Tea Party protesters held a rally outside the Capitol on Saturday, which included speeches by Rep. Michele Bachmann (R-Minn.) and actor Jon Voight, and then proceeded into the halls to lobby members at the 11th hour.

Lewis was one of the leaders of the civil rights movement alongside Martin Luther King. Jr.

Asked if racial epithets were yelled at him, Lewis responded, “Yes, but it’s OK. I’ve heard this before in the ’60s. A lot of this is just downright hate.”

Cereal Liar

From Talking Points Memo:

Recess is a time when members of Congress go home and say the darnedest things to their constituents. Take Michelle [sic] Bachmann. Please.

“The concern is that this energy tax will hike up the cost, not only of our energy bills by an average of more than $2,500 for the typical family of four in Minnesota according to one study, but of everything else that we buy.”

This is peculiar. First of all, there’s no study that says anything like this. Second of all, there is a study that Republicans are citing as a source for their claim that a cap and trade bill will cost the average household $3,128 a year–but the study doesn’t say that either. It says that a cap-and-trade program will raise a certain amount of revenue (over $350 billion at the outset) and Republicans have divided that by the number of households they claim are in America. Of course, the authors of the study say this is all terribly, terribly wrong.

Who’s the Boss?

From The Washington Post:

For a man who expresses no desire to lead the Republican Party, Rush Limbaugh has a knack for creating problems for those who do.

…snip…

The ongoing controversy over Limbaugh’s statement in a speech to the Conservative Political Action Conference on Saturday that he wants “Barack Obama to fail” and the aggressive Democratic pushback it drew has emerged as the latest challenge for a party struggling to find its voice and lacking an obvious national leader.
