You’ve Got Mail…Blessed By Saint Ronnie!

From GAWKER:

Since the dawn of electronics, patriotic conservatives have longed to possess email addresses under the domain “Reagan.com.” At long last, Ronald Reagan‘s eldest son, Michael, has made these addresses available… for $34.95 a year. Because “free” services are liberal.

Tea’ed Off

From TALKING POINTS MEMO:

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell backed the wrong horse in the Senate primary back home in Kentucky and now he’s paying the price with state Republicans. A new PPP (D) poll out today shows McConnell’s approval rating has fallen to a record low 34% in his home state.

Even worse for McConnell is that only 38% of voters surveyed said that they want McConnell to remain the head of his party’s caucus in the Senate. Almost half — 49% — said they don’t think McConnell should keep his job as Republican leader.

Reading the Tea Leaves

From the Los Angeles Times:

DeVore, Fiorina actively court ‘tea party’ vote

Chuck DeVore says he’s created a ‘huge reservoir’ of volunteers, but he’s stuck at 16% in polls. Carly Fiorina, who’s rising in polls, says she does not intend to cede conservative activists.

…snip…

In a year when the imprimatur of the tea party swept Scott Brown to a Senate victory in Massachusetts and helped Rand Paul knock off the establishment Senate candidate in Kentucky — both DeVore and Fiorina are actively courting tea party support.

A Woman’s Work is Sometimes Done!

From Steve Kornacki at Salon:

The seeds of Sunday night’s historic House vote were planted not by Barack Obama’s election in 2008, but by a little-noticed internal House leadership contest nearly a decade ago.

Back in the fall of 2001, two Democrats were vying for the vacant position of House minority whip. But the election wasn’t really for the caucus’ No. 2 leadership spot. It was for the top job.

Richard Gephardt, then the Democrats’ House leader, would be stepping down after the next election, so the winner of the whip’s race would be in line to replace him – and to become the House Democrats’ public face for the next decade, at least. Which is why there was trepidation – to put it mildly – among more than a few Democratic members about the race’s front-runner: Nancy Pelosi.

The GOP Choice: Parker Griffith, Mo or Les

From The Huntsville Times:

Perhaps Congressman Parker Griffith should run ads in Washington to remind his new party which side he’s on.

A letter sent this month by an attack arm of the Republican members of Congress seeks money to defeat Griffith and other “vulnerable out-of-touch Democrats.”

“We’ve been up on the air all over Alabama’s 5th Congressional District so that voters there know your Democrat in Congress has been falling in line with Nancy Pelosi’s destructive liberal agenda,” reads the solicitation.

The Mouse That Whored..for the Insurance Industry

From E.J. Dionne at The Washington Post:

Take yourself back to the endless wrangling in Sen. Max Baucus’ Finance Committee – or, more particularly, among his select “gang of six,” including three Republicans, two of whom clearly never had any intention of voting for health-care reform. They negotiated and negotiated and negotiated and negotiated — and got nowhere. Baucus failed to produce a draft bill before the August recess. The Democrats’ summer of discontent and the tea party madness followed.

This, it turns out, was a crucial moment. It set back the schedule for a health-care bill by at least a month, maybe two. There was no urgency in the Baucus process. Now there is urgency. And that gave Joe Lieberman his near dictatorial powers to kill a Medicare buy-in proposal that he had supported as recently as three months ago.

Wit vs. Half-Wit

From The New York Times:

The former Alaska governor and one-time vice presidential candidate [Sarah Palin] has been traveling the country in recent weeks, promoting her book and disparaging Democrats, the Washington establishment and the media elite. Huge crowds greet her wherever the bus entourage takes her.

…snip…

Well, Saturday night, if all goes to plan, Ms. Palin’s book tour will take her someplace else: the Gridiron Club’s winter dinner in Washington. For those who don’t know, the Gridiron dinners are among the most exclusive of Washington events where the city’s media elite — to borrow a phrase — share dinner, drinks and bonhomie with elected officials, political leaders and other members of the governing elite.

…snip…

Ms. Palin, the Republican vice presidential candidate under Senator John McCain of Arizona last year, is one of two guests speakers, who in years past were invited to provide typically humorous speeches. The other speaker this year is Representative Barney Frank, the liberal Democrat from Massachusetts.

Oh, to be a fly on one of those walls!

Do Your Magic, Harry

From The Washington Post:

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (Nev.) announced Monday that he will seek to bring a health-care bill to the Senate floor that includes a government insurance plan, a major reversal from just two weeks ago, when Reid was leaning against the idea.

He also called for the bill to include a version of the so-called public option with an clause that would allow states to decide by 2014 not to participate in the government plan.

“The best way to move forward is a public option with the opt-out provision for states,” Reid told reporters, adding that he “clearly” believes that such a bill would have “the support of my caucus.”
