Pat Robertson Said That? He Must Be High!

From The Washington Post:

Television evangelist Pat Robertson has made inflammatory remarks in recent years that offend gays, Muslims and others, but a recent comment he made on his Christian Broadcasting Network was more notable for whom it pleased: people who want to see marijuana legalized.

“We’re locking up people that take a couple of puffs of marijuana, and the next thing you know they’ve got 10 years,” the controversial pastor said on “The 700 Club” on Dec. 16, in a clip unearthed by bloggers this week. “I’m not exactly for the use of drugs – don’t get me wrong – but I just believe that criminalizing marijuana, criminalizing the possession of a few ounces of pot and that kind of thing, I mean, it’s just, it’s costing us a fortune and it’s ruining young people.”

Far Right Angle

From David Weigel at Right Now at The Washington Post:

Nevada GOP U.S. Senate candidate Sharron Angle, who never courted the media the way Rand Paul did, has avoided her fellow “tea party” favorite’s mistakes, keeping fairly quiet since securing the nomination Tuesday. That hasn’t stopped Democrats from making Angle the star of their story about the 2010 elections — a saga of tea party activists saddling the GOP with candidates that even an angry electorate can’t possibly send to Washington.

Make Room for Daddy

From FIRST READ at MSNBC:

Ron Paul, father not only of Senate candidate Rand Paul (R-KY) but also of Ron Paul Nation, leaps to his son’s defense in an e-mail fundraising solicitation.

Paul, who was dismissed by the establishment during his 2008 White House bid, showed a prowess for raising money. And he’s trying to go back to the well for Rand.

I Should Say Stupid Stuff to Reporters? Gotcha!

From YAHOO! NEWS:

Sarah Palin still bristles when talking about her initial experience with the national media. After John McCain named her to the 2008 presidential ticket, political reporters understandably had a few questions for a little-known candidate seeking the vice presidency. More than a year after stumbling in a series of interviews with Katie Couric, Palin was still talking of her irritation with the anchor’s innocuous question about what she reads.

On this week’s “Fox News Sunday,” Palin took another swing at the media, comparing what she considers the unfair media treatment of herself during the fall 2008 campaign with the scrutiny that Kentucky Republican Rand Paul has endured since criticizing part of the Civil Rights Act on NPR and on MSNBC’s “Rachel Maddow Show” last week.

Wingnuts and Dolts

From FIREDOGLAKE:

The benefit of this Rand Paul escapade is that his sincerely held views are on full display, and thus the ideology of the “liberty” movement gets a serious airing for the first time. But it’s not like anyone should be surprised by these views. Paul’s father said almost verbatim the same thing on Meet the Press in 2007. He wasn’t considered “serious” by the traditional media at the time. But now that there are tea party beat writers and they’re the newest rage in Washington, this gets exposure.

I’ll tell you what I think just as soon as Frank Luntz tells me what that is

From Steve Benen at POLITICAL ANIMAL at Washington MONTHLY:

When a Republican nominee for the U.S. Senate publicly announces his opposition to the Civil Rights Act of 1964, it’s not unreasonable to think news outlets might ask other Republicans for their thoughts on the matter.

Sen. Jim DeMint (R-S.C.), who played a prominent role in boosting Rand Paul’s (R) candidacy in Kentucky, was initially reluctant to talk about the matter this morning. But pressed by ThinkProgress, DeMint said he supports the Civil Rights Act, adding, “I’m going to talk to Rand about his positions.”

That’s not exactly a bold denunciation, but other GOP leaders preferred an even vaguer approach.

Sen. John Cornyn (R) of Texas, chairman of the National Republican Senatorial Committee, said he’s “really not in a position to comment.”

Re-order in the Court?

From 44 at The Washington Post:

President Obama’s nomination of Solicitor General Elena Kagan to replace retiring Supreme Court Justice John Paul Stevens was met with criticism from the left and the right Monday as liberals continued to raise questions about her views on executive power and conservative bloggers honed in on her lack of experience as a judge.
