Bloodsuckers

From The Miami Herald:

Call 2011 the year of the Republican governor.

Newly elected officials such as New Jersey’s Chris Christie, Florida’s Rick Scott and Wisconsin’s Scott Walker are exerting power in dramatic ways and jumping over each other for a share of the national spotlight.

A Woman’s Work is Sometimes Done!

From Steve Kornacki at Salon:

The seeds of Sunday night’s historic House vote were planted not by Barack Obama’s election in 2008, but by a little-noticed internal House leadership contest nearly a decade ago.

Back in the fall of 2001, two Democrats were vying for the vacant position of House minority whip. But the election wasn’t really for the caucus’ No. 2 leadership spot. It was for the top job.

Richard Gephardt, then the Democrats’ House leader, would be stepping down after the next election, so the winner of the whip’s race would be in line to replace him – and to become the House Democrats’ public face for the next decade, at least. Which is why there was trepidation – to put it mildly – among more than a few Democratic members about the race’s front-runner: Nancy Pelosi.

Supremely Different

From HispanicBusiness.com:

During her debut performance on the Supreme Court bench Monday, Sonia Sotomayor asked more questions in one hour than Clarence Thomas did over the course of several years, according to McClatchy News Service.

The famously taciturn Thomas went for two entire years — or 144 consecutive cases — without making a single statement, the AP reported in 2008.

By contrast, Sotomayor on Monday asked as many questions as Chief Justice John G. Roberts, according to the Washington Post.

Dumbos, the Elephants, Revisited

Yesterday, we looked at a couple of Rethuglican Dumbos. But were their remarks the dumbest of the dumb? They have some mighty stiff competition!

From the St. Louis Post-Dispatch:

WASHINGTON — Michael Steele, the new Republican National Chairman, wants to rebrand the GOP in a new image.

Time will tell whether the Republican Party is prepared for the changes Steele has in mind.

In an interview today with Washington Times, Steele disclosed that he is working on a public relations campaign that seeks to apply GOP principles to “urban-suburban hip-hop settings.”

What Steele has in mind, he says, will “surprise everyone” and be “off the hook.”

Grand Old Party? No, Just Grandstanding!

From the Los Angeles Times:

Reporting from Columbia, S.C. — Would a governor in a state with the third-highest unemployment rate in the nation really say no to President Obama’s stimulus money?

That is the question reverberating through South Carolina, where Republican Mark Sanford — a popular second-term governor and noted fiscal conservative — says he may reject some of the $2.8 billion in federal funds headed to his state.

Some observers suspect that the governor, who is regularly mentioned as a presidential contender in 2012, is just grandstanding. It’s hard for them to imagine a lawmaker leaving millions of dollars on the table in a state with a 9.5% unemployment rate — one that has cut hundreds of millions from its budget in recent months, and will cut millions more in the next fiscal year.
