Working Hard

“There’s no question at times of my life, partially driven by how passionately I felt about this country, that I worked far too hard and things happened in my life that were not appropriate.“-Newt Gingrich

From POLITICAL HOTSHEET at CBS NEWS:

Former House speaker and likely GOP presidential candidate Newt Gingrich, who has been married three times and has acknowledged an extramarital affair, said in an interview this week that his past indiscretions were driven in part by “how passionately I felt about this country.”

“There’s no question at times of my life, partially driven by how passionately I felt about this country, that I worked far too hard and that things happened in my life that were not appropriate,” Gingrich told CBN News Chief Political Correspondent David Brody. “And what I can tell you is that when I did things that were wrong, I wasn’t trapped in situation ethics, I was doing things that were wrong, and yet, I was doing it. I found that I felt compelled to seek God’s forgiveness.”

Where the Blubber Meets the Road

From Newsweek:

It’s the equivalent of a non-denial denial that we will, for our purposes, call a noncommittal confirmation. The Internet lit up this afternoon with word that Newt Gingrich might be considering a presidential run in 2012. A surprise, only because he’s the first GOP contender to allude to an interest in besting Obama. Yet it’s not huge news coming from Gingrich. That’s partly because he didn’t actually announce he’d do anything. And also because “considering” a run for high office is Gingrich’s usual MO to grab the spotlight—especially when he’s got a book to sell, as he does now.

Broder, Can You Spare a Slime?

From Jamison Foster at MEDIA MATTERS:

David Broder does not like politicians who lie.  I know this because he said so himself, in an infamous 1998 Sally Quinn article about why the Washington Establishment was so angry at Bill Clinton for lying about his relationship with Monica Lewinsky:

“The judgment is harsher in Washington,” says The Post’s Broder. “We don’t like being lied to.”

That suggestion — that Washington, DC’s elite residents take greater offense at being lied to than the simpletons outside the nation’s capital — is the kind of thing that would draw heaping piles of scorn from the political media had it come from a liberal Democrat.  But it came from David Broder, beloved “dean” of the Washington Press corps, and so nobody said much of anything about his preening moral superiority.

An Excellent Question

From The New York Times:

When presidential candidates appear at public forums, passions about the field are often on vivid display. Monday, Senator John McCain received a question from a woman in Hilton Head Island, S.C., that was blunt and harsh.

“How do we beat the bitch?” the woman asked.
