Gun debate, you say? Oh, you’re a pistol!

From Newsday:

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer on Tuesday called on President Donald Trump to convene both parties to discuss “some rational laws on gun safety” after a gunman in Las Vegas carried out the country’s worst mass shooting.

…snip…

But Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) and House Speaker Paul Ryan (R-Wis.) both said now is not the time to address gun legislation and made it clear their top legislative priority is the Republican tax plan and budget legislation.

Well then, when the fuck is the right time? Seriously, tell us. We’ll make ourselves available.

Silencers

From ROMPER:

As the nation awakens to the deadliest mass shooting in its history, calls for gun law reform have clamored in the wake of at least 50 dead and another 400 people injured [59 dead, 527 hurt as of this posting]. As vocal as gun safety advocates have been since Sunday night’s horrific shooting, the NRA’s response to the Las Vegas shooting has been lacking, to say the least — as of Monday morning, the National Rifle Association had not yet issued a formal statement.

Bad Heir Day

From POLITICO:

It sounded like a scene from a Cold War spy movie: Donald Trump Jr. was in a helicopter flying low on the outskirts of Russia’s capital city.

“Buzzing the treetops outside Moscow at 100 knots,” Trump Jr. tweeted, adding the aircraft was flying “below radar in closed airspace,” for reasons he did not explain.

It was June 2011, and the future president’s son was on a business trip to Moscow, where Trump Jr. had recently become a regular — and admiring — visitor.

“I really prefer Moscow over all cities in the world,” he had told an audience a few years earlier.

Police Brutality Can Be a Good Thing!

From THE RAW STORY:

At a Senate hearing on gun violence Wednesday, Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC) was humiliated by a police chief who abruptly interrupted his talking points to insist that he’s “wrong” on how enhanced background checks for gun buyers would work.

Echoing the National Rifle Association, Graham argued before the Senate Judiciary Committee that enhanced background checks are not needed because the laws currently on the books are not enforced well enough.

“When almost 80,000 people fail a background check and 44 people are prosecuted, what kind of deterrent is that?” he asked. “I mean, the law obviously is not seeing that as important, if it’s such an important issue, why aren’t we prosecuting people who fail a background check?”

Louie the Gohmert Shoots Off His Mouth

From THINK PROGRESS:

The tragic shooting in Tucson last weekend has sparked a host of proposed legislative responses, but none is as hare brained as Rep. Louie Gohmert’s (R-TX) idea to allow members of Congress to pack heat inside the Capitol Building, and even when on the House floor. Appearing on WorldNetDaily’s Radio America [Thursday], Gohmert explained the need for his bill by falsely claiming that Washington, DC has a “gun ban” (the Roberts Supreme Court did away with DC’s handgun ban in 2008). But later on in the interview, apparently oblivious to the irony, Gohmert noted that there was a era when lawmakers solved problems with armed duels and warned, “we’ve come a long way since those days and we just don’t need to be reverting backwards” […]

I Have a Scream

I’m only writing a few bullet points. And I am doing that so I don’t get in the way of the spirit, in case he wants to talk…if you would just pray that I would be able to hear because sometimes–sometimes he’s screaming at me and I still can’t hear it.-Glenn Beck

Silly Season

From TALKING POINTS MEMO:

In a three-way Tennessee Republican gubernatorial primary to be held this Thursday, two right-wing candidates have been splitting what Monty Python would call the “silly vote,” leaving Knoxville Mayor Bill Haslam as the de facto “sensible candidate,” and thus making him the frontrunner.

A recent Mason-Dixon poll gave Haslam the lead with 36%, followed by Rep. Zach Wamp at 25% and Lt. Gov. Ron Ramsey with 20%. To be sure, Haslam has tacked right somewhat. For example, he used to be a member of New York City Mayor Mike Bloomberg’s (I) Mayors Against Illegal Guns coalition. But in early 2009 he left the group and joined the National Rifle Association.

But with that said, there’s nothing that Haslam has done or said that compares to the other two.

Guns ‘n Poses

From Rough Sketch at The Washington Post:

Arizona voters who don’t pull the lever for Republican congressional candidate Pamela Gorman have this to consider: She just might shoot them.

Gorman, in a new ad, fires a machine gun and pistols scores of times as a goofy sounding announcer calls this year “our best shot at changing Congress. ‘Course that all depends on the caliber of our candidates.”
